Stuttgart Airport lies around 13 kilometres south of Stuttgart city centre on the Filder plateau, right on the A8 between Karlsruhe and Munich. For drivers this is a convenient location – if you know the region's typical bottlenecks. Several of the busiest routes in southern Germany converge around Stuttgart, and roadworks are almost part of everyday life. This guide shows how to arrive smoothly from every direction, which spots to keep an eye on and how to build your schedule backwards from the departure time.
Key facts at a glance
- A8, junction Stuttgart-Flughafen/Messe, or the B27 from the city and the south.
- Traffic traps: Leonberg interchange, Alb ascent, B27 at rush hour, trade fair days.
- Enter the address from your parking booking in the satnav, not just "airport".
- Calculate your schedule backwards from the departure time.
The A8 as the main route
The A8 is the most important access road. Coming from the west – from Karlsruhe, Pforzheim or via the A81 from Heilbronn – you pass the Stuttgart interchange and shortly afterwards reach the Stuttgart-Flughafen/Messe junction. Coming from the east – from Ulm, Augsburg or Munich – the A8 leads over the Swabian Alb and through the Neckar valley near Wendlingen onto the Filder plateau. The junction is clearly signposted; then follow the signs to the airport or your parking provider's directions.
The B27 from the city and the south
From Stuttgart city centre, the B27 leads via Degerloch onto the Filder plateau and past the airport towards Filderstadt, Nürtingen and Tübingen. For travellers from the city, from Tübingen, Reutlingen or the Neckar valley, it is often the most direct connection. During rush hour, however, the B27 is very busy, especially between Degerloch and Echterdingen in the morning towards the city and in the afternoon in the opposite direction. If you drive at these times, allow more time.
The Leonberg interchange and the Stuttgart interchange
West of Stuttgart, the A8 and A81 meet at the Leonberg interchange and run together as far as the Stuttgart interchange. This section is one of the most congested in Baden-Württemberg. If you are coming from the direction of Heilbronn, Pforzheim or Karlsruhe, always expect delays here, especially on weekdays at peak times and on Friday afternoons. Check the traffic situation before setting off and, for a morning departure, allow rather too much reserve than too little.
The Alb ascent from the Ulm direction
From the Ulm direction, the A8 leads over the Alb ascent between Mühlhausen and Aichelberg. Gradients, lorry traffic and weather make this section prone to congestion and accidents. In winter, snow and ice can slow the journey further. Travellers from Ulm, the Alb-Donau district or Upper Swabia should therefore plan generously and know the weather forecast. If you are coming from the south, also check whether Memmingen or Friedrichshafen Airport is an alternative for your trip.
From the Rems-Murr district and Hohenlohe
From Waiblingen, Schorndorf or Backnang, the B14 and the B29 lead towards Stuttgart; from there you continue through the city and the B27 or via Esslingen and the Filder plateau to the airport. From Hohenlohe, you reach the Stuttgart interchange via the A6 and the A81. Which route is fastest depends very much on the time of day. A satnav with real-time data helps you avoid congestion. An overview by region is provided in the guide Getting to Stuttgart Airport from the region.
Trade fair days on the Filder plateau
The Stuttgart trade fair centre is right next to the airport and shares its access roads. During major events, many visitors arrive by car, and the junction and the roads around the airport and trade fair centre are correspondingly busy. Check the trade fair's events calendar before your trip and allow extra time on trade fair days. More on this: Parking at Stuttgart Airport during trade fairs.
Calculating your schedule backwards
- The airline's lead time until arrival at the terminal.
- Time for parking: valet a few minutes, shuttle a transfer block.
- Driving time plus reserve – allow generously around Stuttgart.
Example: departure at 14:30, two hours' lead time, so in the terminal at 12:30. Valet meeting point at 12:15. From Pforzheim via the A8 you allow about 40 minutes at midday, plus 30 minutes' reserve for the Leonberg interchange: departure at 11:05. For early flights, the guide Early flight from Stuttgart gives further tips.
Navigation and the last few metres
Around the airport there are several access roads, multi-storey car parks and forecourts, as well as roadworks that change the traffic routing from time to time. If you only enter "Stuttgart Airport" in your satnav, you may end up at the terminal forecourt instead of the booked car park. So always enter the address from your booking and check the evening before whether the satnav finds it correctly. Many providers would like a short call before you arrive – see frequently asked questions about calling the provider.
If time gets tight
If you are stuck in traffic, first inform the parking provider so they can plan. Then check whether you can check in online and drop off your baggage at a machine. If time is very short, contact the airline. Tips are available under frequently asked questions about delays on the way. Staying calm helps: hectic driving rarely saves more than a few minutes.
Refuelling, charging and the drive home
Refuel or charge before the trip so that you can get home without a detour after your return. After a late return flight, you don't want to look for a petrol station first. For the drive home: check the traffic situation before setting off and drive well rested. If you are tired, take a break or let a fellow traveller drive.
From the Black Forest and the Gäu
From Freudenstadt, Calw or Nagold, the route leads via federal roads into the Gäu and on to the A81 near Herrenberg or Gärtringen. At the Böblingen/Sindelfingen interchange you take the A81 towards Stuttgart and at the Stuttgart interchange the A8 towards Munich, until the Flughafen/Messe junction follows shortly afterwards. The section around Sindelfingen is often heavy with commuter traffic from the large employers there. If you are flying in the morning, set off correspondingly earlier. From the southern Black Forest, a route via Tübingen and the B27 sometimes makes sense too – on the day of travel, the satnav with traffic data decides.
From Tübingen, Reutlingen and the Alb
The B27 is the natural connection for travellers from the Tübingen and Reutlingen area. It runs as a four-lane road via Filderstadt directly past the airport. At peak times, traffic slows above all between Aich and Bernhausen and at the slip roads. From the Swabian Alb, you also reach the B27 or the B312 via Metzingen and Nürtingen. In winter, the roads up and down the Alb can be icy; then allow extra time for the first few kilometres before you reach the better-cleared main roads.
With a motorhome, trailer or roof box
Multi-storey car parks have height restrictions, and not every site accepts long vehicles. If you are travelling with a motorhome, van, trailer or tall roof box, clarify before booking whether the provider can accommodate the vehicle, and state its length and height. Valet providers also check whether their drivers move such vehicles. Without this clarification, there may be a surprise at the meeting point – more on this under frequently asked questions about large vehicles.
If you know the region's bottlenecks and have the address of your parking booking in the satnav, you will reliably reach the Filder plateau even at peak times – and start your trip without stress.
Have a good drive up to the Filder plateau – and a relaxed departure!
And if something does come up: a short call to the provider solves most problems before they arise.
