Flight delayed or cancelled at Düsseldorf Airport: your rights & next steps

Looking for parking at Düsseldorf Airport? Compare provider prices and book online right away.
The departure board switches to “Delayed” or – even worse – “Cancelled”. For many travellers, that is when the stress begins: will I make my connection? Will I get money back? And what about my car in the car park? At Düsseldorf Airport, as at any large airport, this happens regularly, especially during the holidays, in severe weather or during strikes. In this guide we explain step by step what to do in the event of a delay or cancellation, what rights you have under the EU air passenger rights regulation and how to deal with your parking provider.
Key facts at a glance
- Under EU Regulation 261/2004, an arrival delay of at least three hours or a short-notice cancellation often entitles you to 250, 400 or 600 euros – except in extraordinary circumstances.
- You are entitled to care (food, drinks, a hotel if needed) from two hours of waiting, depending on the route – even in severe weather.
- At Friend-Park you can cancel your parking free of charge up to 24 hours before it starts; if you return later, inform the provider immediately.
First steps at the airport
- Stay calm and get informed: check the departure boards, your airline’s app and your emails. Airlines often inform you digitally first about new times or rebookings.
- Ask at the gate or counter: ask about the reason for the delay and the expected new departure time. Write down the answers.
- Collect evidence: take photos of the departure board, keep your boarding pass and booking confirmation, and collect receipts for food, drinks or taxis.
- Claim care services: depending on the waiting time, you are entitled to meals and, if necessary, a hotel night (see below).
- Inform your parking provider: if your return is postponed as a result or your outbound flight is cancelled, contact the provider early.
Your rights under the EU air passenger rights regulation
Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 protects passengers on flights departing from the EU and on flights into the EU with an EU airline. In principle, it therefore applies to flights from Düsseldorf. It covers three types of entitlement:
1. Care
If you have to wait a long time, the airline must look after you. The threshold depends on the flight distance: from two hours for short-haul, from three hours for medium-haul and from four hours for long-haul flights. Care includes:
- meals and refreshments in reasonable relation to the waiting time
- two phone calls, emails or similar means of communication
- a hotel night including transfer if departure is postponed to the next day
You are also entitled to care if the delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances such as severe weather. If the airline does not offer it, you can pay reasonable costs yourself and have them reimbursed later – receipts are important for this.
2. Compensation
If you arrive at your final destination more than three hours late or your flight is cancelled at short notice, you are in many cases entitled to fixed compensation. The amount depends on the flight distance:
- 250 euros for flights up to 1,500 kilometres
- 400 euros for intra-EU flights over 1,500 kilometres and for other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 kilometres
- 600 euros for all other flights over 3,500 kilometres
As a rule, there is no compensation in extraordinary circumstances beyond the airline’s control – such as extreme weather, security risks or air traffic control decisions. For cancellations, the entitlement also lapses if the airline informed you in good time; the regulation sets out the exact deadlines. To check whether you have a claim, it is best to use the information from the consumer advice centre (Verbraucherzentrale) or the Federal Aviation Office (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt).
3. Refund or alternative flight
In the event of a cancellation – and for very long delays – you can choose between a refund of the ticket price, re-routing at the earliest opportunity or rebooking to a later date of your choice. Have the options explained to you at the counter and decide calmly.
Missed connecting flight
If you depart from Düsseldorf and change planes on the way, you should know: if everything is booked on one ticket, the airline must carry you onwards if you miss a connection. What counts for compensation is the delay at your final destination. With separately booked flights, you bear the risk yourself. So plan generous connection times for separate bookings.
Package holidays: the tour operator is your contact
If you have booked a package holiday, the tour operator is also your contact in addition to the airline. In the event of significant delays, you may also be entitled to a reduction in the travel price, for example if you lose a day of your holiday. Report the problem immediately to the tour guide or the tour operator.
What happens to your parking space?
Delay on the outbound flight
If your outbound flight is only delayed and you fly on the same day, nothing usually changes for your parking. Your car is already with the provider.
Cancellation before departure
If you find out about the cancellation while still at home, you can cancel your parking at Friend-Park free of charge up to 24 hours before the booked arrival – in your customer account or, as a guest, via booking management. If you find out at shorter notice, write to us immediately with your booking number. We will look for a solution together with the provider. All details are in the guide Cancelling and changing a parking booking and in the FAQ on flight cancellations.
Delayed return flight
If your return flight is delayed by a few hours, inform the provider as soon as you know. If you gave your return flight number when booking, many providers can track your arrival themselves. If you only return on a later day, the daily rate is usually charged for the additional days. More in the FAQ on delayed return flights.
A tip: the cost of additional parking days may, under certain circumstances, be claimed from the airline as consequential damage if it is responsible for the delay. So keep the parking provider’s invoice.
Keep important contact details to hand
Before every trip, save on your phone: your airline’s hotline, your flight booking reference, your parking provider’s phone number from the booking confirmation and your Friend-Park booking number. If something goes wrong, you don’t have to search but can react immediately.
A special case: delays caused by strikes
Strikes are a special case. Whether compensation is due depends on who is striking. For strikes by security staff or air traffic controllers, courts often assume extraordinary circumstances. If the airline’s own staff strike, however, courts have upheld compensation. You are entitled to care and re-routing in any case. More in the guide Strike at Düsseldorf Airport.
Enforcing your claims
First contact the airline in writing and claim compensation and reimbursement of costs, setting a deadline. Useful information includes the flight number, date, booking reference, photos of the departure board and receipts. If the airline does not respond or refuses, you can turn to the German conciliation body for public transport (söp), provided the airline takes part in conciliation, or to the Federal Aviation Office. There are also claims services that pursue claims in return for a commission.
Denied boarding due to overbooking
A special case is overbooking: the airline has sold more tickets than there are seats on the aircraft and therefore refuses to carry you. The airline must first look for volunteers who give up their seats in exchange for an agreed benefit. If you are denied boarding against your will, you are entitled under the EU air passenger rights regulation to the same compensation as for a cancellation, plus care and the choice between a refund and an alternative flight. Ask for written confirmation of the denied boarding.
How to reduce the risk
- Fly in the morning: early flights are less often affected by delays that build up over the day.
- Generous connection times: especially with separately booked flights.
- Park flexibly: give your return flight number when booking your parking so the provider can spot delays.
- Buffer on your return day: don’t plan important appointments straight after landing.
Book parking with fair conditions
At Friend-Park you can see the final price including service fee and the cancellation conditions before booking. That way you know exactly where you stand if your plans change. Compare the providers at Düsseldorf Airport: Search for parking at Düsseldorf Airport.
Conclusion: know your rights, collect evidence, inform your provider
A delay or cancellation is annoying, but you are not powerless. EU air passenger rights entitle you to care, often to compensation and, in the event of cancellation, to a refund or an alternative flight. For your parking: inform the provider early, cancel free of charge while you can, and keep the invoices. More answers are in our FAQ on problems.
