Flight delayed or cancelled at Frankfurt Airport: rights, connections & parking
Published on
Looking for parking at Frankfurt Airport? Compare provider prices and book online right away.
Frankfurt is one of Europe’s largest hubs. Short- and long-haul flights meet here, many passengers change planes, and weather, strikes or technical problems anywhere in the network quickly affect many flights. If your flight from Frankfurt is delayed, cancelled or you miss your connection, you need to act quickly and correctly. In this guide we explain your rights under the EU air passenger rights regulation, the special features of connections in Frankfurt and what to do about your booked parking.
Key facts at a glance
- From an arrival delay of three hours at your final destination or a short-notice cancellation, you are often entitled to 250, 400 or 600 euros – except in extraordinary circumstances.
- You are entitled to care (food, drinks, and a hotel and transfer for an overnight stay) regardless of the reason.
- If you miss a connection on a single ticket, the airline must carry you onwards.
- Cancel parking free of charge up to 24 hours before the start; if you return later, inform the provider immediately.
Immediately at the airport: the first steps
- Get informed: check the airline app, your emails and the departure boards. In the event of cancellations, airlines often automatically offer rebooking in the app.
- Ask at the transfer desk: in Frankfurt the airlines have transfer and service desks. Ask about the reason, the new time and alternatives.
- Keep evidence: photos of the departure board, boarding passes, receipts for food, taxis or hotels.
- Claim care: meals, drinks, and a hotel and transfer for an overnight stay.
- Inform your parking provider: if your return is postponed or your outbound flight is cancelled.
Your rights under EU Regulation 261/2004
Care
After a certain waiting time, the airline must look after you: from two hours for short-haul, from three for medium-haul and from four hours for long-haul flights. This includes reasonable meals and drinks, means of communication and, if departure is postponed to the next day, a hotel including transfer. This obligation also applies in extraordinary circumstances such as severe weather. If the airline offers nothing, you can pay reasonable costs yourself and have them reimbursed.
Compensation
- 250 euros for flights up to 1,500 kilometres
- 400 euros for intra-EU flights over 1,500 kilometres and other flights up to 3,500 kilometres
- 600 euros for flights over 3,500 kilometres
The condition is an arrival delay of at least three hours at your final destination or a short-notice cancellation. There is no payment in extraordinary circumstances such as extreme weather or air traffic control decisions. On long-haul flights over 3,500 kilometres, the payment can be halved if the airline offers re-routing with a limited delay.
Refund or re-routing
In the event of a cancellation, you choose between a refund of the ticket price, an alternative flight at the earliest opportunity or rebooking to a later date of your choice.
A Frankfurt speciality: missed connections
Many travellers don’t just start in Frankfurt, but change planes here or fly from here to a transfer airport. For missed connections:
- One ticket: if all flights are on one booking, the airline must carry you onwards. For compensation, the delay at your final destination counts.
- Separate tickets: if a delay makes you miss a separately booked connection, you usually have no claim against the second airline. Plan generous connection times for separate bookings.
- Changing terminals: in Frankfurt a connection can mean switching between Terminals 1, 2 and 3. More in the guide Terminals at Frankfurt Airport.
Flights outside the EU
The EU regulation applies to all flights from Frankfurt and to flights into the EU with an EU airline. If you fly back to Frankfurt with an airline from a non-EU country, it does not apply to that leg – then the airline’s rules and possibly the law of the country of departure apply. The Montreal Convention may also allow compensation for proven damage caused by delay.
What happens to your parking space?
Cancellation before departure
If you find out about the cancellation in time, you can cancel your parking at Friend-Park free of charge up to 24 hours before the booked arrival. If you paid online, the full amount including service fee is automatically refunded. In shorter-notice cases, write to us immediately with your booking number – we will look for a solution with the provider. More in the FAQ on cancellations and under How to cancel.
Rebooking to another day
If you are rebooked onto a later flight, your parking booking often no longer fits. You cannot change the period and service yourself: cancel free of charge in good time and book again – or contact us.
Delayed return flight
Inform the provider as soon as you know about the delay. If you gave your return flight number, many providers track the arrival themselves. The daily rate is usually charged for additional days. Keep the invoice – depending on the cause, you may be able to claim the extra costs from the airline. More in the FAQ on delayed return flights.
For late arrivals, check whether the provider offers shuttle or valet service at that time. More in the guide Returning: collecting your car at Frankfurt Airport.
Strikes as the cause
With strikes, compensation depends on who is striking. Strikes by airport or security staff are often considered extraordinary, strikes by the airline’s own staff generally not. You are always entitled to care and re-routing. More in the guide Strike at Frankfurt Airport.
Denied boarding due to overbooking
If you are denied boarding because of overbooking even though you arrived on time, you are entitled to the same compensation as for a cancellation, plus care and the choice between a refund and an alternative flight. Ask for written confirmation of the denied boarding.
Enforcing your claims
Claim compensation and reimbursement of costs from the airline in writing – with the flight number, date, booking reference, a description and receipts. Set a deadline. If the airline doesn’t respond, the German conciliation body for public transport (söp) can help, provided the airline takes part, or the Federal Aviation Office (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt). Claims services pursue claims in return for a commission.
Package holidays: the tour operator is your contact
With package holidays, the tour operator is responsible alongside the airline. It must help in the event of flight cancellations, arrange alternatives and, if necessary, provide accommodation. If you lose holiday time because of a significant delay, you may be entitled to a reduction in the price of the trip. Report the problem immediately to the tour operator or tour guide and keep all evidence.
Long-haul: special features
On long-haul flights from Frankfurt, the consequences of a cancellation are often greater: alternative flights are less frequent, and rebooking can take a day or more. Make sure the airline provides a hotel and transfer if you have to stay overnight. If you have booked onward travel at your destination – such as a rental car, a cruise or a hotel – inform those providers immediately. Depending on the case, compensation for consequential costs may be possible; receipts are crucial for this.
Flight cancelled: staying overnight with children and luggage
If you have to stay overnight in Frankfurt because of a cancellation, the airline must provide a hotel and transfer. Your checked luggage sometimes stays in the system. So always pack a change of clothes, medicines and chargers in your hand luggage. With children, snacks, nappies and entertainment for several hours help. Tips in the guide Travelling with children at Frankfurt Airport.
Making good use of waiting time at Frankfurt Airport
For longer delays, Frankfurt offers plenty of options: restaurants, quiet zones, lounges (depending on ticket or status) and hotels near the terminal. Travellers with children will find play areas. Still keep an eye on the departure boards – new departure times can be brought forward at short notice.
Prevention
- Generous connection times, especially with separate tickets
- Morning flights are less often affected by knock-on delays
- Give your return flight number when booking parking
- No important appointment straight after your return
- Phone numbers of the airline and parking provider saved
Diversions because of the night-flight rules
A special feature of Frankfurt is the night-flight ban for scheduled flights during the core night hours. If a heavily delayed flight can no longer land in time, it may be diverted to another airport. The airline must then usually carry you onwards, for example by bus or train to Frankfurt. In this case, inform your parking provider immediately so they can plan the return of your car for the next day.
Conclusion: know your rights, collect evidence, inform your provider
Delays and cancellations are not unusual at the Frankfurt hub, but you are well protected. Know your rights, document everything and keep your parking provider informed.
