Aircraft wing above the clouds at dawn – parking for an early flight at Berlin (BER) Airport

Many holiday flights from BER depart in the early morning hours. For people from Berlin and Brandenburg this means: setting off in the dark while the city is still asleep. The roads are clear then, but other things become critical – for example whether your parking provider is already open and when the first shuttle runs. With this guide you can plan your early flight from Berlin Brandenburg Airport so that nothing can go wrong in the morning.

Key facts at a glance

  • The parking provider's operating hours are the most important question for an early flight.
  • Valet saves the transfer; with shuttle parking, the frequency early in the morning is what counts.
  • The evening before: check in online, pack, refuel, enter the address in the sat nav.
  • Plan a buffer for night-time roadworks even on empty roads.

Step one: check the operating hours

Before you decide between valet and shuttle, clarify whether the provider can be reached at your time. Some parking services work around the clock, others at fixed times with an additional service outside them. You will find this information in the offer description. How to compare providers in general is explained in the guide Choosing a parking service at BER.

Valet or shuttle before six in the morning?

With valet parking you drive directly to the meeting point at the terminal and go straight to check-in. This is particularly pleasant early in the morning. With shuttle parking you need to know the first bus of the day and allow enough time for it. If you would only just catch the first shuttle, it is better to take the one before – if there is one – or to opt for valet.

Schedule: an example from Potsdam

  1. Departure: 6:20 from Terminal 1, European flight.
  2. In the terminal according to the airline: two hours before, i.e. 4:20.
  3. Valet meeting point: 4:05.
  4. Drive from Potsdam via the Berlin ring road and the A113: around 40 minutes at night, plus a 20-minute buffer.
  5. Setting off: 3:05.

The example shows how early it really gets. On days when the holidays start in Berlin and Brandenburg, the queue at check-in can already be long at four in the morning – then it is better to allow a little more lead time.

The evening before

  • Complete online check-in and save the boarding passes.
  • Finish packing your suitcases and have liquids for hand luggage ready.
  • Refuel or charge the car.
  • Open the parking confirmation, enter the address in the sat nav, save the phone number.
  • Check traffic reports for the A100, A113 and A10.

And bus or train?

The Flughafen BER station is located beneath Terminal 1 and is served by the FEX, regional trains and S-Bahn trains. You should check the timetable beforehand to see whether a train is already running at your departure time. If you are coming from the surrounding area, travelling with children or carrying heavy luggage, you are often better off with the car early in the morning.

If something comes up

A diversion, an accident, a forgotten charging cable: if you are running late, contact the parking provider immediately. The frequently asked questions about arriving late help with questions about the journey.

Why BER has so many early flights

Many holiday and low-cost connections depart from BER in the early morning hours. This makes sense for airlines, because it allows the aircraft to fly several rotations a day. For travellers it means: if you want to fly on holiday cheaply, you often have to get up early. So that this does not become stressful, it is worth planning in a way that takes the early morning seriously – from the parking provider's operating hours to the question of whether cafés in the terminal are already open.

Staying overnight near the airport?

If you are coming from far away, for example from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania or Saxony, you sometimes consider spending the night before a very early flight near BER. There are hotels in Schönefeld and the surrounding area. This shortens the night-time drive but raises the question of where the car is overnight and how you get to the car park or meeting point in the morning. Work out whether this is worthwhile compared with an early drive. Often a well-planned morning with valet is the simpler solution.

Early flight with children

With children, an early flight is a particular challenge. A tried-and-tested approach is to let the children sleep in comfortable travel clothes, pack the car the evening before and install the child seats already. In the morning the children are carried straight to the car and keep sleeping during the drive. At the airport, valet saves reloading into a shuttle – a big advantage with sleepy children. More tips in the guide With family and luggage to BER.

Preventing oversleeping

Set two alarms on different devices, one of them outside the bedroom. Ask someone to call you at the agreed time. Put everything you need in the morning in a fixed place: ID, phone, keys, confirmation. If it happens anyway, call the parking provider immediately and check in the airline's app whether you can still make it.

Security control in the morning

Early in the morning, many flights depart within a narrow time window, so baggage drop-off and security can be correspondingly busy. Prepare your hand luggage: liquids according to the applicable rules, laptop to hand, no prohibited items. With online check-in and only hand luggage, go straight to security. BER publishes current information on its website.

Breakfast and coffee

Not all cafés in the terminal open for the first wave of departures. Take a small breakfast and an empty water bottle that you fill after security.

Early flights in winter

In winter, darkness, cold and possibly icy roads are added. Clear the windows completely and expect slower traffic. If ice is forecast, set off earlier. For the return, an ice scraper in the boot helps if the car was parked outdoors.

Checklist for an early flight from BER

  • Provider's operating hours or first shuttle checked
  • Online check-in done, boarding pass on your phone
  • Luggage packed and loaded the evening before
  • Address from the booking saved in the sat nav
  • Buffer planned for night-time roadworks
  • Return times matching the return flight

If the early flight is rescheduled

Airlines sometimes move early flights by a few hours – for example because of schedule changes. So check your flight times again a few days before the trip. If the departure has moved, adjust your parking booking.

You can enter small changes such as a new flight number yourself at Friend-Park. If the flight is moved by a day, cancel within the deadline and book again.

In any case, inform the provider if your arrival time at the car park changes. That way they can plan their drivers or shuttles correctly.

Combining an early flight with the train?

Some travellers from Berlin take the train for early flights, because they reach the Flughafen BER station directly beneath Terminal 1. The timetable shows whether trains are already running at your time.

With a lot of luggage, children or from the surrounding area, however, the car is often still the more practical solution early in the morning – especially if a valet service is waiting at the meeting point.

The return after an early-flight holiday

If you start your holiday early, you often come back in the evening or at night, because the same aircraft lands back in Berlin at the end of the day. So plan the return just as carefully as the departure. Check whether your parking provider still returns vehicles at your landing time, state the flight number in the booking and save the phone number on your phone. If the return flight is already delayed at your holiday destination, inform the provider before you board. That rounds off a well-planned trip, and you will not find yourself in front of a closed gate in Schönefeld after landing.

With this planning, an early departure from BER is not a feat of strength but simply the first step of a well-organised trip – from the alarm clock to the gate and, at the end, back to your own car.

Thinking about the return flight

If you fly out early, you often land late in the evening on your return. So also check the provider's return times. Tips on this in the guide Late arrival at BER.

Which parking offers at BER can be booked through Friend-Park and what operating hours they have is shown on the page Parking at Berlin Airport.

Frequently asked questions

That differs from provider to provider. Check the operating hours and whether a handover outside these hours is possible – the details are in the offer description.

That depends on whether there are already connections at your time. With a lot of luggage or from the surrounding area, the car is often the more reliable choice early in the morning.

Less than in rush-hour traffic, but not zero: roadworks are often set up at night. Check the traffic reports the evening before.
