Many holiday flights from Baden-Airpark depart early in the morning. For you this means: the alarm rings in the middle of the night, the roads are empty, and many travellers gather at the airport within a short time. With good planning, you can still start your holiday relaxed. This guide shows how to work out the schedule backwards, which questions to ask the parking provider, what to watch out for in the Rhine plain at night and what you can do the evening before.
Key facts at a glance
- Work backwards from the bag-drop deadline.
- Check the parking service’s business hours for your time.
- Allow for fog and night roadworks on the A5.
- Pack, weigh and lay everything out the evening before.
Why so many flights depart early
Holiday and low-cost airlines use their planes as intensively as possible. A plane that takes off from Baden-Airpark at six can fly several rotations by the evening. For travellers this means: the cheapest or only connections to some destinations are in the early morning hours. If you fly to the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands or the Balkans, you are therefore often in the first wave.
Working out the schedule backwards
The starting point is not the departure time, but the time at which the airline closes bag drop. You will find it in the conditions of your ticket. Before that, allow time for queuing at the counter and at security, which can be longer in the morning wave. Before that comes the handover to the driving service or the bus ride from the car park. And before that the drive from home, plus a buffer. An example: a couple from Ettlingen flies shortly after six. They want to be in the terminal about two hours before departure, plan a quarter of an hour for the handover at the meeting point and around 35 minutes for the night-time drive on the A5, plus 20 minutes’ buffer. So the alarm rings at around half past two. The figures are an example and do not replace your airline’s information.
Is the parking service already working?
Not every provider is operating at four in the morning. Before booking, check from when the driving service accepts cars or when the first bus runs. Reputable providers state their business hours in the offer. If you are unsure, call beforehand. A phone number where someone can be reached even at night is one of the most important criteria for early flyers. Further tips: Choosing a parking service at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport.
Driving service or bus early in the morning?
With an early departure, a lot speaks for the driving service: you drive up to the terminal, hand over the key and go straight to the counter. No waiting for a bus, no reloading suitcases in the cold. For long trips the bus model can still make sense if you plan enough buffer and the first bus runs early enough. The trade-off is described in Valet or shuttle at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport.
At night on the A5
At night there is considerably less traffic on the A5 than during the day, but not none: lorries are also on the road in the early morning hours, and roadworks are often set up at night, sometimes with individual lanes or sections closed. Check the traffic reports for your route the evening before. In autumn and winter, fog in the Rhine plain is added, which can severely restrict visibility. Then drive more slowly and plan more time.
The evening before is half the battle
- Pack and weigh the suitcases and put them by the front door.
- Lay out ID, boarding passes and parking confirmation or save them on your phone.
- Refuel or charge the car so that no detour is needed in the morning.
- Check the traffic and roadworks for the route.
- Set two alarms – one of them not on your phone.
- Lay out clothes for the morning; put children in comfortable clothes already.
Leaving early with children
Children often just keep sleeping in the car. Put a blanket and pillow in the car, carry them in asleep and only wake them at the airport. A small breakfast in the hand luggage helps, because not all outlets in the terminal are open early in the morning. Liquids in containers over 100 millilitres are not allowed through security; refill empty water bottles afterwards. More for families: With the family to Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport.
Staying overnight near the airport?
If you are travelling from the northern Black Forest, the Kurpfalz or the southern Breisgau, with a very early flight you might consider spending the night before near the airport – there are hotels in Baden-Baden, Bühl, Rastatt and Rheinmünster. That costs extra, but shortens the night-time drive and reduces the risk of missing the flight because of a closure. You then book the parking space from the morning of departure.
If the alarm fails
Oversleeping happens. Then speeding on the A5 does not help. Call the parking provider on the way and say when you will realistically arrive. At the airport, if time is short, go straight to the airline. Whether you can still make the flight depends on the airline’s deadlines. Tips on calling the provider: frequently asked questions about calling the provider.
To an early flight without a car
Buses connect Baden-Airpark with railway stations in the area. For flights in the early morning hours, however, a suitable connection does not always run yet. Check the timetable for your time before relying on it. If only a taxi or a pre-booked car service remains, it is worth comparing with the costs of car and parking.
Entering the start of parking correctly
In the booking, enter as the start of parking the time you arrive at the meeting point or site – not the departure time. This also matters for free cancellation: at Friend-Park it is possible up to one day before the booked start of parking. With a parking start at four in the morning, the deadline therefore ends at four the day before – in the middle of the night. If you are still unsure whether the trip will go ahead, it is better to decide the evening before that. More: Cancelling or rebooking parking at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport.
Check your hand luggage
Many airlines at Baden-Airpark check the size and weight of hand luggage at the gate. If you only find out there that your trolley is too big, you pay extra. Measure the evening before – wheels and handles count too.
The morning wave in summer
In high season, several planes often leave Baden-Airpark shortly after one another early in the morning – to Mallorca, the Greek islands, the Turkish Riviera. Then as many travellers stand in the terminal in one hour as otherwise in half a day. Especially on Saturdays in the summer holidays, it pays not to arrive at the last minute but to make full use of the airline’s lead time.
Wildlife at dawn
The last kilometres to the airport pass woods and fields of the Rhine meadows. At dawn, deer and wild boar are on the move there. So drive attentively and no faster than necessary on the country roads around Hügelsheim, Stollhofen and Söllingen – a collision with wildlife is the worst possible start to a holiday.
Coffee for the road
If you get up at three, you need something warm. A thermos flask for the drive is practical; you have to empty it before security. In the terminal, the first outlets open in the morning, but not all in time for the first departure wave.
If the airline reschedules
Sometimes an airline brings a departure forward by half an hour at short notice. Check your airline’s app the day before and adjust your alarm and the start of parking by informing the provider.
After the early start
The advantage of the early hour: if you take off at six, you are often already at your destination by mid-morning and have almost the whole first day of your holiday to yourself.
In brief
Work backwards, choose a parking service that operates at your time, prepare the evening before and leave a buffer for fog and roadworks – then even a six o’clock start will be relaxed.
