Parking a large car, van or minibus at Düsseldorf Airport: sizes, height limits and special cases
Published on
Not everyone heads to Düsseldorf Airport in a hatchback. Families with three children travel in seven-seaters, sports clubs hire nine-seat minibuses for training camps, and tradespeople often have nothing but the company van. Large vehicles are exactly where most questions about airport parking arise. Will it fit? Will it cost more? Will a valet driver even take it? Here is what you need to know before you book.
Key facts at a glance
- Friend-Park uses four size classes: standard, large/SUV, van and transporter.
- Each provider decides which classes it accepts and at what maximum size.
- Height is the critical measurement – many car parks have limits around two metres.
- Roof boxes, bike racks and towbars count.
- Motorhomes, caravans and trailers are special cases that need prior agreement.
Width, length – and above all height
A typical parking bay in Germany is about 2.5 metres wide and 5 metres long. A long seven-seater fills it completely; a minibus spills over into the aisle. But the measurement that most often causes real problems is height. Multi-storey car parks around Düsseldorf Airport, like most in Europe, have entry barriers around two metres high. Many vans and nearly all high-roof minibuses simply won't go in.
For the provider, a large vehicle means fewer spaces for other customers and more effort manoeuvring. That is why many charge a surcharge for larger classes or don't accept certain sizes at all.
How the size classes work
| Class | Typical vehicles | Key measurement |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Small cars, family hatchbacks, estates, compact SUVs | Normal bay size |
| Large/SUV | Large SUVs, 4x4s, long saloons | Length and width |
| Van | MPVs, seven-seaters, standard-roof people carriers | Height and length |
| Transporter | Nine-seat minibuses, panel vans, high-roof models | Height, length, weight |
When you book, you see which classes the provider accepts, the maximum dimensions for each and any surcharge. Your class appears in the confirmation, so the provider knows in advance what is coming. General answers are in our FAQ can I park a large vehicle?.
Finding your exact dimensions
For German-registered cars, length, width and height are listed in millimetres in the registration certificate (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I). For foreign cars, check your registration document, the owner's manual or the manufacturer's website. Watch out for two common mistakes:
- Width without mirrors: official figures usually exclude door mirrors, which add 20 to 30 centimetres.
- Height without extras: roof rails, roof boxes, roof-mounted bike carriers and some aerials all add height.
If in doubt, measure. A tape measure and two minutes give you a definite answer.
Valet with a large vehicle
With valet parking, a driver takes your vehicle at a meeting point near the terminal. With something big, two extra questions arise. First, may the driver legally drive it? Nine-seaters and most vans up to 3.5 tonnes can be driven on a standard car licence, so this is rarely an issue. Second, does it fit the handover area? If the meeting point is inside a multi-storey car park, its height limit applies. Clarify where the handover takes place before you travel. The general procedure is described in how valet parking works in Düsseldorf.
Shuttle parking with a large vehicle
With shuttle parking you drive to the operator's site yourself. For big vehicles this is often the simpler option: open-air sites have no height barrier, and staff will direct you to a suitable spot. It also suits groups – if eight of you arrive in a minibus, you all travel together. Remember, though, that all eight will ride the shuttle bus to the terminal, so the number of passengers must be as accurate as the vehicle class. See how many people can ride the shuttle.
Group trips from the Rhine and Ruhr region
Football youth teams off to a spring training camp, a bowling club heading to Mallorca, colleagues travelling to a trade fair in Barcelona – group travel from Düsseldorf is common. Taking one nine-seater instead of three cars saves spaces and usually money, provided the booking is right. Book the transporter class for a nine-seater, enter every passenger, and think about luggage: sports bags, golf bags and equipment cases take room on the shuttle too. For larger groups, call the provider in advance so it can plan a suitable bus.
With valet and a group, appoint one person to deal with the provider and do the handover while the others take the luggage towards the terminal. It saves time and confusion at the meeting point.
Hire vans and company vehicles
If you are driving a rented minibus or a company car, check the rental or company terms first. Some contracts don't allow third parties to drive the vehicle – which rules out valet. Shuttle parking, where you park the vehicle yourself, is then the safe choice. And with a company car, make sure its plate, not your private car's, is in the booking.
Motorhomes and caravans
The question comes up regularly: can I drive my motorhome to Düsseldorf Airport and leave it there while I fly? Only if a provider explicitly allows it. Motorhomes take several bays, are often over three metres tall and may weigh more than 3.5 tonnes, which not every driver may legally handle. Valet is practically out of the question. Some shuttle operators with large open-air sites can make an exception, but only by prior arrangement. Caravans and trailers are rarely accepted for space reasons. Our advice: ask the provider directly and get the confirmation in writing.
Large electric cars
Big electric SUVs are often heavier and wider than comparable combustion cars, but the size class is still based on dimensions. If you'd like your car charged while you are away, check whether the provider offers it – our guide parking an electric car at Düsseldorf Airport has more.
What if you booked the wrong class?
Turn up with a larger vehicle than booked and the provider may charge a surcharge or, if there is no room, refuse the vehicle. During the NRW summer holidays, when many sites around Düsseldorf are full, a free large space is not a given. If you realise you'll be taking the bigger car, change the class before you travel – see getting your booking details right.
Picking up a large vehicle on your return
Some providers keep larger vehicles in a separate area, so bringing a van round to the valet meeting point can take a few extra minutes. Call once you have your bags. With shuttle parking, you'll find your vehicle faster if you noted or photographed the bay on arrival. Before driving off, check the roof edge and the sides at mirror height – with big vehicles, scrapes from manoeuvring tend to appear there rather than on the bumpers.
Checklist
- Note length, width with mirrors and height with roof box.
- Choose the matching class and compare offers for that class.
- For valet, confirm where the handover is and whether a height limit applies.
- For shuttle, enter every passenger.
- Motorhome, caravan or trailer only with written agreement.
- Photograph the vehicle at drop-off, including the roof if you can.
Conclusion
An SUV, van or minibus is no obstacle to parking at Düsseldorf Airport – as long as the size class is right and you know your dimensions. For tall vehicles, shuttle parking on an open-air site is often the most relaxed choice; motorhomes need explicit approval. Find offers that suit your vehicle on parking at Düsseldorf Airport.
