Parking a large vehicle at Hannover Airport: SUVs, seven-seaters, vans and minibuses

Rows of white vans from above – parking a large car or van at Hanover Airport

Many international residents in Germany drive bigger cars than the locals: a large SUV shipped over from North America, a seven-seater for a family with three children, or a company van. Hannover also has a special relationship with vans: the famous VW bus has been built in the Stöcken district for decades, and you see Multivans and Transporters everywhere in the region. Then there are trade fair teams who arrive in a nine-seat minibus. German parking infrastructure, though, is built for compact cars – narrow bays, low ceilings, tight ramps. This guide explains how to choose the right class and the right service at Hannover Airport.

Key points

  • Friend-Park uses four classes: Standard, Large/SUV, Van and Transporter.
  • Measure length, width with mirrors and height with roof load.
  • Over roughly two metres high: choose a shuttle with an open-air site.
  • Company, lease or hire vehicles: check who may drive.
  • Motorhomes and trailers only with written confirmation.

No car parks can be booked through Friend-Park at Hanover Airport yet.

As soon as a partner is activated, you will find their offers with real prices on the airport page.

Think in metres, not feet

German parking limits are given in metres. Two metres is about six feet seven inches; 2.10 metres is just under six feet eleven. Your registration document lists width without mirrors – add 20 to 30 centimetres, roughly eight to twelve inches. A roof box adds 40 centimetres or more, a roof bike rack even more. If in doubt, measure the highest point with a tape.

The four classes

ClassTypical vehiclesWatch out for
StandardSmall cars, hatchbacks, estatesRarely a problem
Large/SUVLarge SUVs, luxury saloons, pick-upsLength, width with mirrors
VanSeven-seaters, Multivan, people carriersHeight with roof box
TransporterPanel vans, nine-seat minibuses, campervansHeight, length, weight

When you book, the provider description shows which classes are accepted, with dimensions. If you are between two classes, choose the bigger one. General answers are in the FAQ can I park a large vehicle?

Full-size SUVs and pick-ups

A full-size American SUV or pick-up can be well over five metres long and more than two metres wide with mirrors. That is larger than almost anything sold new in Germany. It will usually fit the Large/SUV class in length, but tight multi-storey ramps and narrow bays can be a problem. An open-air shuttle site gives you more room. Mention the exact model in the remarks.

Height and parking decks

Many valet operators use decks or halls with a height limit of about two metres. A normal SUV fits; a high-roof van, a campervan with a pop-up roof or a car with a roof box often does not. Above two metres, an open-air site with a shuttle is the safe choice. See shuttle parking at Hannover.

Valet with a large vehicle

Valet is comfortable with a large vehicle because you step out right at the terminal kerb. Three conditions must be met: the provider accepts the class, the parking space is high enough, and a third party is allowed to drive. More on the process in valet parking at Hannover.

Company cars, leases and hire vehicles

Many expats have a company car or lease. Some contracts only allow named drivers or employees. Then a valet driver may not drive, and you book a shuttle and park yourself. The same applies to hire vans: read the rental terms first.

Passengers and luggage

A large vehicle often means a large group. Seven people need seven shuttle seats and space for seven suitcases. Enter every passenger and list pushchairs, dog crates, golf bags or ski bags in the remarks. See how many passengers fit in the shuttle and travelling with family and luggage from Hannover.

Motorhomes and campervans

A converted campervan often fits the Transporter class. A full motorhome is usually more than three metres high, over seven metres long and above 3.5 tonnes – unsuitable for valet and too big for many shuttle sites. Ask the provider directly, get the agreement in writing and leave nothing valuable inside.

Trailers and tow bars

Trailers – horse trailers, boat trailers, small luggage trailers – are rarely accepted. They need a lot of space and are hard to manoeuvre. Plan to leave the trailer at home. A tow-bar bike rack makes the car longer, which counts for the class and the space.

Three examples

The Millers from Ohio, living in Hannover-List

They shipped their full-size SUV to Germany. For a trip home over Christmas, they book Large/SUV with a shuttle provider on an open site, note the exact model and enter five passengers and six suitcases.

Raj, an engineer with a company Multivan

His company policy only allows employees to drive. He books a shuttle in the Van class and parks the bus himself.

A trade fair team from Scandinavia

Eight colleagues come by minibus, fly on after the fair and leave the vehicle for three days. They book the Transporter class, enter eight passengers and book early, because large spaces are scarce in fair weeks. See parking for the Hannover trade fair.

Decision table

Your situationRecommendation
Under two metres, own carValet or shuttle in the right class
Over two metres highShuttle with an open-air site
Third-party driving not allowedShuttle, park yourself
Many passengers and bagsShuttle with correct count, or valet
Motorhome or trailerOnly with written confirmation

Driving a big vehicle on the A2

The A2 is full of lorries, and roadworks often restrict the left lane to vehicles up to two metres wide. With a wide SUV or a van you may have to stay in the right lane among the trucks. Allow extra time and watch for the signs. Route details are in driving to Hannover Airport.

Electric SUVs and vans

More and more large vehicles are electric. The class does not change, but your planning does: charge enough before you leave to get home after the trip. Electric vans are heavier because of the battery, which matters if a provider lists weight limits.

Booked the wrong class?

Change the booking as soon as you notice. Arriving with a larger vehicle than booked can mean a surcharge or refusal. See getting your booking details right.

Navigating the last kilometres

Open-air sites for large vehicles are usually in business parks around Langenhagen rather than right at the terminal. Look at the final approach on a map the evening before. Narrow residential streets, tight roundabouts or a low railway underpass are no fun in a minibus or a motorhome. Follow the directions in your confirmation rather than blindly trusting the navigation app, and if your vehicle is over two metres high, check any height signs on the way.

Unloading tools and equipment

Vans are often full of tools, samples or camping gear. Anything expensive or visible through a window should come out or be covered before you leave the vehicle for days.

At pick-up

Large vehicles are often parked in separate rows, so bringing yours round can take a little longer. Call once you have your bags and check mirrors, sides and roof edge before driving off – on tall vehicles, scrapes tend to happen high up and at the corners.

Conclusion

A large SUV, a VW bus or a minibus is no problem at Hannover Airport if you know your measurements in metres, choose the right class, check the height, clarify who may drive and arrange motorhomes and trailers in writing. All offers with accepted size classes are on the page parking at Hannover Airport.

Frequently asked questions

Usually Large/SUV or Van, depending on length and height. Compare your measurements with the dimensions the provider lists for each class.

Often not. Many decks are limited to around two metres. Choose a shuttle provider with an open-air site instead.

Only if the provider accepts the class and your lease or company policy allows third-party drivers.

It takes up more space and needs more room to manoeuvre. On Friend-Park the final price including the size class is shown when you book.
