Parking a large vehicle at Nuremberg Airport: full-size SUVs, pick-ups, minivans and passenger vans
Published on
Walk through the car park at any base exchange in Bavaria and you will see vehicles that rarely appear elsewhere in Germany: full-size SUVs, crew-cab pick-ups, eight-seat minivans. Many American families ship their vehicle over or buy one locally from someone rotating home. These vehicles are perfect for long drives to the Alps or the Baltic – but German parking infrastructure was designed around compact European cars. Bays are narrow, parking decks have low ceilings, and ramps are tight. This guide explains how to book the right class and the right service when you take a large vehicle to Nuremberg Airport.
Key points
- Friend-Park uses four classes: Standard, Large/SUV, Van and Transporter.
- Measure in metres: length, width with mirrors, height with roof load.
- Over about two metres (6 ft 7 in): open-air site with shuttle.
- Government, company or rental vehicle: check who may drive.
- RVs and trailers only with written confirmation.

As soon as a partner is activated, you will find their offers with real prices on the airport page.
Converting to metres
German limits are in metres. Two metres is about 6 feet 7 inches; five metres is about 16 feet 5 inches. A full-size SUV is often around 5.2 to 5.7 metres long and more than 2.2 metres wide with mirrors. A crew-cab pick-up can be close to six metres. Your registration lists width without mirrors – add 20 to 30 centimetres. A roof cargo box adds 40 centimetres or more.
The four classes
| Class | Typical vehicles | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Compact cars, sedans, European wagons | Rarely an issue |
| Large/SUV | Full-size SUVs, large sedans, many pick-ups | Length, width with mirrors |
| Van | Minivans, seven- and eight-seaters | Height with roof box |
| Transporter | Passenger vans, cargo vans, very long pick-ups | Height, length, weight |
The provider description shows accepted classes and dimensions. If you are between two, take the larger. See the FAQ can I park a large vehicle?
Parking decks versus open-air sites
Many valet operators use covered decks or halls with a height limit around two metres. Most SUVs fit under that, but the width and turning circle of a full-size vehicle can make tight ramps stressful. Pick-ups with a raised cap or roof rack, minivans with a cargo box and passenger vans often exceed the height. An open-air shuttle site is the safe choice. See shuttle parking at Nuremberg.
Valet with a big vehicle
Valet saves you from unloading the whole family into a bus. Three conditions: the provider accepts the class, the parking space is high and wide enough, and a third party may drive. Mention the exact model in the remarks so the provider can plan. More in valet parking at Nuremberg.
Who may drive?
If the vehicle is a government vehicle, a company car or a rental, check the rules. Many only allow named drivers. Then you book a shuttle and park yourself.
Passengers and luggage
An eight-seat minivan can mean eight shuttle seats and eight large suitcases on a trip home. Enter every passenger and list car seats, strollers, pet crates or sports gear in the remarks. See how many passengers fit in the shuttle and travelling with family from Nuremberg.
RVs and campervans
A campervan conversion may fit Transporter. A full RV is usually over three metres high and seven metres long and above 3.5 tonnes – not suitable for valet and too big for many sites. Ask the provider directly and get confirmation in writing.
Trailers and hitch racks
Trailers are rarely accepted. A hitch-mounted bike rack or cargo carrier adds length, which affects the class and the space. Leave them at home if you can.
Three examples
The Garcias in Vilseck
A full-size SUV, five people, a trip home to California. They book Large/SUV with a shuttle provider on an open site, note the model and enter five passengers and seven bags.
Staff Sergeant Lee and a crew-cab pick-up
The truck is just under six metres long. He asks the provider, books Transporter as advised and parks himself.
An engineering team in Erlangen
Six colleagues share a rented passenger van to the airport for a project trip. The rental terms only allow named drivers, so they book a shuttle in Transporter and enter six passengers.
Decision table
| Your situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Under two metres, own vehicle | Valet or shuttle in the right class |
| Over two metres | Shuttle, open-air site |
| Third party may not drive | Shuttle, park yourself |
| Many passengers and bags | Shuttle with correct count, or valet |
| RV or trailer | Only with written confirmation |
Driving a wide vehicle on German roads
In autobahn roadworks the left lane is often restricted to vehicles up to two metres wide. With a full-size SUV or pick-up, stay right. The Frankenschnellweg and city streets near the airport are narrower than American roads. Allow time. Routes in driving to Nuremberg Airport.
The final approach
Open-air sites for big vehicles are often in business areas or neighbouring villages. Check the last kilometres on a map the evening before; narrow village streets and low underpasses are best avoided. Follow the directions in your confirmation.
Why a surcharge?
A full-size vehicle can take up almost two European spaces and needs room to turn. On Friend-Park, the price you see when booking already includes the class. Compare final prices in your class, not standard-car prices.
Gear in the truck bed and cargo area
A pick-up bed or a van's cargo area is easy to see into. Tools, coolers, bikes or sports equipment left there are an invitation. Empty the bed or lock everything in a covered toolbox, and take electronics into the house before you leave. A tonneau cover helps, but an empty bed is safest.
Electric SUVs and trucks
Large electric SUVs and pick-ups are heavy because of their batteries. That rarely matters for the class but can matter if a provider lists a weight limit. Charge enough before the trip to get home without a detour – charging stations near the Upper Palatinate training areas are fewer than in the city.
Turning circles and tight bays
The biggest challenge with a full-size vehicle in Germany is often not length but manoeuvring. Many bays are around 2.5 metres wide, and older parking decks have ramps with sharp turns. A long wheelbase means wide turns and more risk of scraping a wall or curb. That is one more reason to prefer an open-air site, where the provider has room to place your vehicle at the end of a row. If you do choose valet, tell the driver about the vehicle's turning circle and any parking sensors or cameras that help.
Book early
Large spaces are limited and go first in Bavarian school holidays and around Christmas. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the service starts makes early booking low-risk.
Booked the wrong class?
Change it as soon as you notice. A bigger vehicle than booked can mean a surcharge or refusal. See getting your booking details right.
At pick-up
Large vehicles are often parked at the edge of the site, so bringing yours round may take a little longer. Call once you have your bags and check mirrors, bumpers and corners before you drive off.
Conclusion
A full-size SUV, pick-up or minivan is no problem at Nuremberg if you know its size in metres, book the honest class, check height, clarify who may drive and arrange RVs in writing. All offers with accepted classes are on the page parking at Nuremberg Airport.
