Parking a large vehicle at Stuttgart Airport: SUVs, pickups, vans and campers
Published on
Drive around Vaihingen, Böblingen or Möhringen and you will notice vehicles that look oversized next to the typical German hatchback: full-size SUVs, crew-cab pickups and American minivans, often with US Forces plates. Add the region's own fleet of large company cars, family vans and trades vans, and you have plenty of big vehicles heading to Stuttgart Airport. European parking infrastructure was not built for them. Height barriers, narrow spaces and tight ramps are common. This guide explains how size classes work on Friend-Park, why height and length matter more than you think and when shuttle parking is the better choice.
Key facts at a glance
- Size classes on Friend-Park: standard, large/SUV, van and transporter.
- Measure length, width with mirrors and height including roof racks.
- Many US vehicles exceed typical European dimensions.
- Taller than about two metres: shuttle on an open lot is the safe choice.
- Camper vans and motorhomes only with written confirmation.
No car parks can be booked through Friend-Park at Stuttgart Airport yet.

Why size matters more in Europe
A standard parking space in Germany is around 2.5 metres wide and 5 metres long. Many multi-storey car parks have a height limit of about 2 metres. A full-size American SUV can be well over 5 metres long and over 2 metres wide including mirrors; a crew-cab pickup can approach 6 metres. That means such vehicles may not fit into standard rows, may block neighbouring spaces and may be difficult to move. Providers plan their lots carefully, so they need to know what is coming.
Step 1: Know your numbers
Find three figures: length, width with mirrors and height including anything on the roof. For a US-spec vehicle, the owner's manual or the manufacturer's website lists them in inches – convert them (1 inch = 2.54 cm). European registration documents give width without mirrors, so add 20 to 30 cm. Measure the height yourself if you have a roof box, bike rack or roof tent.
Step 2: Choose the class
| Class | Typical vehicles | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Compact cars, estates, small SUVs | Rarely an issue |
| Large/SUV | Large SUVs, luxury saloons, some pickups | Length and mirror width |
| Van | Minivans, seven-seaters | Height, especially with roof racks |
| Transporter | Nine-seaters, panel vans, camper vans | Height, length, weight |
When booking, you see which classes a provider accepts, the dimensions for each and any surcharge. If you are between two classes, choose the larger. General answers are under can I park a large vehicle?.
Step 3: Valet or shuttle?
Valet
Valet is convenient: you hand over at the terminal and skip the shuttle. But the handover point may be in or near a car park with limited height, and the driver needs to manoeuvre your vehicle on the lot. For a large SUV under two metres, valet usually works if the provider accepts the class. For tall vans, pickups with a canopy or anything with a roof box, check the handover location first.
Shuttle
Shuttle providers on open lots in Filderstadt or Leinfelden-Echterdingen often have more flexibility with large vehicles because there are no height barriers. You park yourself, which also solves the question of whether someone else may drive your car. For many big vehicles, shuttle is the simpler choice. See shuttle parking at Stuttgart.
Step 4: Who may drive the car?
If the vehicle is your own, a valet driver may move it. If it is a company car, a rental or a vehicle from a motor pool, check the rules. Many fleet policies and rental agreements only allow named drivers. In that case, book shuttle and park the vehicle yourself.
Step 5: Passengers and luggage
Large vehicles often mean large groups. If seven people get out of a minivan, the shuttle needs seven seats plus room for luggage. Enter every passenger and mention bulky items – strollers, car seats, golf bags, sports equipment – in the notes. More under how many people can ride the shuttle.
Camper vans and motorhomes
Baden-Württemberg has one of the highest numbers of motorhomes in Germany, and some travellers want to combine a road trip with a flight. Leaving a motorhome at the airport is only possible with providers who explicitly allow it. Motorhomes are often over three metres tall, seven metres long and heavier than 3.5 tonnes. Ask the provider directly, get written confirmation and remove all valuables, as a motorhome is effectively a small home on wheels.
Three examples
The pickup from Panzer Kaserne
Sergeant Davis drives a crew-cab pickup and flies to Rome for a long weekend. The truck is just under two metres tall but almost six metres long. He books shuttle parking in class large/SUV after checking that the provider's dimensions allow his length, and parks on an open lot without height restrictions.
The family minivan from Vaihingen
The Garcias have a US-spec minivan and four children. With the roof box the van is taller than two metres; without it, just under. Since they will rent a car at their destination, they remove the box, book class van and choose valet so nobody has to carry luggage onto a shuttle.
The camper from Esslingen
Anna and Tom own a converted camper van with a pop-up roof. They ask two providers in advance, get written confirmation from one and book class transporter with shuttle. Laptop and camera go in their hand luggage.
Electric SUVs and charging
More and more large vehicles in the region are electric, from German premium SUVs to American pickups. The drive type does not change the size class, but it does change your planning. Charge enough before you leave to get home after your trip without a detour, and do not assume the lot offers charging. If a provider does, it is shown in the description. Electric SUVs are also heavy, which matters for some covered or multi-level areas – another reason to check the provider's limits.
Why larger vehicles cost more
A full-size pickup or a nine-seater often takes up the space of two ordinary cars and needs room to manoeuvre. On the Filder plain, where land is scarce and expensive, that is a real cost for the provider. On Friend-Park the surcharge is already included when you book, so compare the final price rather than the headline rate.
Trade fair days
The Messe Stuttgart sits right next to the airport. Exhibitors often arrive in vans full of material and fly on afterwards. On big fair days, space for large vehicles is especially scarce. Book early and enter your class accurately. More in the guide trade fair parking at Stuttgart Airport.
Wrong class booked?
Change the class as soon as you realise. If you turn up with a larger vehicle than booked, the provider may charge a surcharge or may not be able to take it. Help is in getting your booking details right.
On your return
Large vehicles are sometimes parked in separate rows, so bringing them out can take a few extra minutes. Call once you have your luggage and mention your terminal. Before driving off, check the sides at mirror height and the roof edge. More in picking up your car after your trip.
Conclusion
Big vehicles and European parking can coexist – with a little preparation. Know your dimensions, choose the right class, check height before booking valet, confirm who may drive and arrange motorhomes in writing. Then your SUV, pickup or van is in good hands at Stuttgart Airport. All offers are on the page parking at Stuttgart Airport.
