Hand writing an appointment in a monthly calendar – cancelling or changing a car park booking at Hamburg Airport

Sometimes something comes up: the airline cancels the flight, the boss moves the project, the children have a fever. Then you want to know quickly what happens to your booked car park at Hamburg Airport. The good news: for bookings via Friend-Park, the rules are clear and quickly explained.

Key facts at a glance

  • More than 24 hours before the service begins: cancellation free of charge.
  • At shorter notice: no cancellation via Friend-Park; the provider’s terms apply.
  • Free cancellation = full refund for online payment, including the service fee.
  • New period: cancel and book again.

The three scenarios

1. Cancelled in good time: if the start of the service – i.e. the planned vehicle handover – is more than 24 hours away, cancellation costs nothing. If you paid online, the full amount including the service fee is automatically refunded to your payment method.

2. Cancelled at short notice: within the last 24 hours, cancellation via Friend-Park is no longer possible; the provider’s terms apply.

3. Did not turn up: if you don't turn up without cancelling, the full fee may be charged.

The legal basis is the Friend-Park Terms and Conditions (§ 10).

How to cancel

With a customer account: open the booking in your overview and cancel. Without an account: via Find booking, enter your email address and booking number; you receive a secure link that is valid for 72 hours. You can cancel online up to 24 hours before the vehicle handover at the latest. The steps are also shown in the frequently asked questions about cancelling.

Changing a booking means booking again

You cannot change the period or the service yourself. Cancel the old booking free of charge and create a new one – or, if time is short, contact us via the contact form. You handle smaller changes such as the number plate, vehicle, name, flight number or notes yourself up to the handover; see frequently asked questions about changing a booking.

When Hamburg is hit by strikes

Strikes at German airports are usually announced at short notice. Check immediately whether your flight is affected and cancel the car park while you are still within the free cancellation period. If your flight is only cancelled on the day of travel, get in touch immediately anyway. Advice: frequently asked questions about a cancelled flight.

Extended holiday

If your return flight is moved, inform the provider so that your car is not ready at the old time, and clarify how the extra days will be charged. See frequently asked questions about a delayed return flight.

Direct booking with the provider

If you booked directly with the car park operator, its rules apply. Before booking, check cancellation deadlines, change fees and refund methods – this is part of choosing any provider; see Choosing a parking service at Hamburg Airport.

What is not handled by the parking provider

If your flight is cancelled, you may have claims against the airline – for example to a refund of the ticket or compensation under European air passenger rights. These claims are to be made against the airline, not the parking provider or Friend-Park. Only the rules described above apply to the car park. Keep the airline's cancellation notice.

Calculating the deadline correctly

The 24-hour deadline refers to the booked start of the service, i.e. the time of the planned vehicle handover – not the departure. If you booked the handover for Saturday at 5:15 because your holiday flight departs at 7:15, free cancellation ends on Friday at 5:15. This is particularly important for early flights from Hamburg, because the deadline then expires during the night before the day of travel. Enter it in your calendar straight after booking.

What applies to short-notice cancellations

Within the last 24 hours, cancellation via Friend-Park is no longer possible; the terms of the respective provider then apply. The provider has planned space and possibly staff for you. If you don't turn up at all, the full fee may become due. So even cancelling at short notice is worthwhile – it limits the costs.

When the airline changes the times

With package holidays and scheduled flights, it happens that flight times are changed weeks in advance. After every notification, check your parking booking. You enter a new flight number yourself; if the trip is moved by a day, cancel in good time and book again.

Storms and flight cancellations

In autumn and winter, storms can affect air traffic in northern Germany. If your flight is cancelled as a result, the normal cancellation rules apply to the car park. Weather-related cancellations cannot be planned by anyone – all the more important to have the deadline, booking number and contact details to hand.

Refund

When an online-paid booking is cancelled free of charge, the full amount including the service fee is automatically refunded to the original payment method. How quickly the credit appears depends on your payment service provider. Keep the cancellation confirmation until the money has arrived.

Small changes without cancelling

If the family car has to go to the garage shortly before the trip and you travel in a different car, you change the number plate and vehicle yourself at Friend-Park up to the handover. The same applies to the name, flight number and notes. You only need a new booking for the period and service.

Cancelling due to illness

If someone falls ill shortly before departure, don't wait until the last minute if it is foreseeable that you will not fly. More than 24 hours before the service begins, cancellation is free of charge. If you have travel cancellation insurance, check whether it covers incidental costs such as parking fees.

When the flight departs late because of fog

Autumn fog can lead to delays and occasionally cancellations in northern Germany. If your departure is only delayed by a few hours, you usually do not need to cancel your car park – but inform the provider so that it knows you will arrive later or earlier. If the flight is cancelled entirely, the cancellation rules apply: free of charge up to 24 hours before the service begins, after that the provider’s terms.

Groups and clubs

If a group or club drives to Hamburg Airport with several cars and the trip is cancelled, each booking must be cancelled individually. It is easiest if one person made all the bookings and cancels them centrally. If everyone booked themselves, quick coordination is needed so that nobody misses the deadline.

Collecting documents

Create a folder in your email inbox for each trip and save the booking confirmation, the cancellation confirmation and messages from the airline there. If you want to claim costs from travel cancellation insurance or have questions about the refund, you will find everything in one place.

Booking again with care

After cancelling because of changed dates, you should book the new period promptly – especially if it falls in the holidays. Check the terminal, number of passengers and flight numbers again and compare the final prices, because a different period may cost differently.

Changes by the tour operator

With package holidays, tour operators sometimes change the flight times – by hours or to a different day. After every notification, check your parking booking. If only the time has shifted, inform the provider; if the day has changed, cancel in good time and book again. Keep the tour operator's notification in case you want to claim costs later.

This way your parking booking stays up to date even when your travel plans change.

In brief

When plans change at Hamburg Airport: react early, measure the deadline from the start of parking, change small details yourself and book again for new times. With these rules you remain able to act in the event of fog, storms, strikes or changed flight times and avoid unnecessary costs.

And if you are unsure which route is right in your case – changing, cancelling or extending – write to us in good time via the contact form. We will help you as long as there is still enough time before parking begins.

This way a changed trip remains a manageable effort – and not an expensive annoyance.

Three tips

  1. Enter the 24-hour deadline in your calendar straight after booking.
  2. Keep your booking number and email address to hand.
  3. If strikes are reported, don't wait – check immediately.

You can book again as soon as offers are available via the page Parking at Hamburg Airport. Planning tips: Reserving a car park at Hamburg Airport.
