Getting to Hannover Airport from the region: routes and buffers
Published on · updated on
No car parks can be booked through Friend-Park at Hanover Airport yet.
As soon as a partner is activated, you will find their offers with real prices on the airport page.
Between the Weser and the Elbe, between the heath and the Harz, there is no larger airport than the one in Langenhagen. Accordingly, some passengers travel a long way: from the Osnabrück area as well as from Wolfsburg, from Uelzen as well as from Göttingen, some even from the Altmark. Each of these regions has its own route and its own bottlenecks. They are compiled here so that you can find the right time buffer for your starting point. On the day of travel, a satnav with live traffic also helps.
Key facts at a glance
- A2 and A7 as the main axes, A352 feeder to the airport.
- Bottlenecks: lorry convoys on the A2, motorway interchanges near Hannover, roadworks.
- Choose your buffer according to route and time of day.
- Put the address from the parking booking into the satnav.
From Braunschweig, Wolfsburg and Salzgitter
From Braunschweig, the A2 leads west towards Hannover. From Wolfsburg you take the A39 to the A2, from Salzgitter the A39 or the A7. At the Hannover-Ost interchange, the A2 and A7 meet; from there you continue towards the A352 and the airport. The A2 is one of the most important east–west axes for freight traffic and is busy on weekdays. For morning departures, allow plenty of time; at night and at weekends you usually make good progress.
From East Westphalia: Bielefeld, Herford, Minden
From Bielefeld and Herford, the A2 leads east via Bad Oeynhausen and past the Schaumburg area towards Hannover. From Minden you reach the A2 via the B65 or the B482. On this section, roadworks and lorry traffic are frequent causes of delays. If you come from East Westphalia, also check whether Paderborn/Lippstadt or Münster/Osnabrück airport is an alternative for your trip.
From Hildesheim, Göttingen and the Harz
From Hildesheim and Göttingen, the A7 leads north. It passes Hannover to the east and meets the A2 at the Hannover-Ost interchange. From the Harz foothills, for example from Goslar or Seesen, you take the A7 or the B6 and the A7. During the holidays, the A7 is heavily used by holiday traffic because it connects Scandinavia and southern Germany.
From Hameln and the Weser Uplands
From Hameln, the B217 leads to Hannover. From there you go through the city or via the Westschnellweg towards the north. Depending on the time of day, the drive through the city can be slow; a satnav with traffic data helps you choose. From the Holzminden area the journey is long – allow enough time for it.
From Celle and the Lüneburg Heath
From Celle, the B3 leads south towards Hannover and Langenhagen. From Soltau, Walsrode or Uelzen you come via the A7 or federal roads. The heath is sparsely populated and the roads are often easy to drive, but in autumn fog can restrict visibility.
From Bremen and the north-west
From Bremen, the A27 leads to the Walsrode junction and on south via the A7. From Verden or Nienburg there are federal roads towards Hannover. For travellers from Bremen, Bremen Airport is usually closer; some still fly from Hannover if the right connection departs from there.
From Saxony-Anhalt
From Magdeburg, the A2 leads west via Helmstedt and Braunschweig to Hannover. The route is long and heavily used by lorries on weekdays. Plan generously and check the traffic before setting off.
From the Hannover surroundings
From Garbsen, Wunstorf or Neustadt am Rübenberge, the airport is close. From Burgdorf, Lehrte or Sehnde, the A7 or country roads lead to Langenhagen. From Laatzen or Hemmingen in the south, you go through the city or via the Messeschnellweg and the A2. For travellers from the surrounding area with an S-Bahn connection, the train is also an option, changing to the S5 at the main station.
How much buffer?
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Short drive, early morning | small reserve, check night-time roadworks |
| A2 on weekdays in rush hour | generous reserve |
| A7 at the start of the holidays | considerably more time |
| Trade fair week | additional reserve |
| Winter with icy roads | watch the weather, leave earlier |
Parking for travellers from further afield
After an hour and a half on the A2, nobody wants to wait another half hour for a bus. For long-distance travellers, the driving service in front of the terminal is therefore often the most pleasant solution; for long holidays, an outdoor car park with a bus is usually cheaper. If a provider's site is right on your route, you also save detours. Help with deciding: Valet or shuttle at Hannover Airport and Choosing a parking service at Hannover Airport.
By train from the region
By train you can travel comfortably from many directions to Hannover main station, where you change to the S5 towards the airport. With a rucksack and a suitcase this works well. With three children, a pushchair and large luggage, or for a departure at six in the morning, the choice usually falls on your own car.
From Osnabrück and the Emsland
From Osnabrück, the A30 leads east to the Lotte/Osnabrück interchange and on via the A1 or federal roads towards the A2; alternatively you go via Bad Oeynhausen directly onto the A2. From the Emsland the journey is long. For many travellers from this region, Münster/Osnabrück airport is closer; you fly from Hannover if the right connection departs from there.
From Uelzen and the Wendland
From Uelzen, the B4 leads south towards Gifhorn and Braunschweig, from where you join the A2; alternatively via Celle and the B3. From the Wendland, the routes are long and run over country roads. Plan generously for these routes and check fog warnings in autumn.
Car sharing
If several people are travelling from the same place, sharing a car saves parking costs. Clarify beforehand who drives and who books, and note the shuttle providers' rules on the number of passengers.
In brief
Good routes lead to Langenhagen from all parts of Lower Saxony. What matters is the right route, a reserve for the A2 and A7 and a look at the weather, holidays and trade fairs.
Weather and season
In winter, the Harz and the Solling are often snow-covered while it rains on the plain. In autumn, fog often lies over the heath and the river lowlands. If you are travelling from higher ground, allow more time for the first few kilometres. In summer, thunderstorms with heavy rain can briefly slow traffic on the A2 and A7.
Have a good drive from every corner of Lower Saxony!
From Gifhorn and the north-east
From Gifhorn, the B188 leads west to the A2, or you go via Celle and the B3 to Langenhagen. From the Wittingen area, the routes are long and run over country roads. Plan generously and check fog warnings in autumn.
Night-time roadworks
On the A2 and A7, construction work is often carried out at night to spare daytime traffic. For early flyers this means that between 22:00 and 05:00 in particular, lanes may be closed or exits shut. Check the Autobahn GmbH roadworks reports the evening before and allow a few minutes in reserve.
Long-distance bus and ride sharing
From some regions, long-distance buses run to Hannover; from there you continue on the S5. With lots of luggage this is tiresome, but for solo travellers with a rucksack it is an option.
In brief
Whether from East Westphalia, the Braunschweig region, the heath or the Harz: with the right route, a reserve for the A2 and A7 and a look at the weather, holidays and roadworks, you will arrive in Langenhagen relaxed.
Once you have found your route, you will drive even more relaxed next time.
