The catchment area of Allgäu Airport is large: it stretches from the Munich metropolitan area via Augsburg and Ulm to Lake Constance, into the Oberallgäu and across the border into Vorarlberg and Tyrol. For many of these travellers, Memmingen is the cheapest or most convenient airport – if the journey is well planned. Because there is no railway station at the terminal, almost everyone comes by car. This guide describes the most important routes and typical bottlenecks, and helps you choose the right time buffer.
Key facts at a glance
- The A96 and A7 meet near Memmingen; exit Memmingen-Ost.
- Enter Memmingerberg in the sat nav.
- Winter and holiday traffic lengthen the drive.
- Choose a buffer to match the airline deadlines.
From Munich
From Munich, the A96 runs west via Landsberg and Buchloe. Without traffic jams the drive takes a good hour. On Friday afternoons, at the start of the holidays and with roadworks it can take considerably longer. If you come from the north or east of Munich, you first have to get to the A96 via the Mittlerer Ring or the A99 – an additional time factor at peak times.
From Augsburg
From Augsburg you take the B17 south and then the A96 west, or federal roads towards Mindelheim to the A96. Depending on your starting point, the drive takes about an hour. In rush-hour traffic, the B17 around Augsburg is congested.
From Ulm and Neu-Ulm
From Ulm, the A7 runs south to the Memmingen junction, where you switch to the A96. The route is short and usually flows freely. During the holiday season, however, there is a lot of traffic on the A7 heading for the Alps.
From Kempten and the Oberallgäu
From Kempten, the A7 runs north to the Memmingen junction. From Sonthofen, Oberstdorf or Immenstadt you take the B19 to Kempten and then the A7. In winter the roads in the Oberallgäu can be snow-covered; plan correspondingly more time.
From Füssen and the Ostallgäu
From Füssen, the A7 runs north. From Kaufbeuren and Marktoberdorf you reach the A96 via the B12 or the A7 via federal roads. The routes are well developed but get a lot of snow in winter.
From Lindau and Lake Constance
From Lindau, the A96 runs north-east via Wangen to Memmingen. From Friedrichshafen and Ravensburg, federal roads lead to the A96. For some travellers from Lake Constance, Friedrichshafen Airport is also an option; what matters is where the suitable connection departs from.
From Upper Swabia
From Biberach, the B30 runs south; from Laupheim and Ehingen, federal roads lead towards the A7. From there you head to the Memmingen junction and onto the A96. This region belongs to Baden-Württemberg – whose holidays also influence demand at Allgäu Airport.
From Vorarlberg and Tyrol
From Bregenz and Vorarlberg, you take the A96 via Lindau. From the Ausserfern and parts of Tyrol, the Fern Pass route leads via Reutte and Füssen to the A7. Note: a vignette is required for Austrian motorways, and on holiday weekends the Fern Pass road is often very busy.
How much buffer?
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Short drive from Memmingen or Ulm | small buffer |
| A96 from Munich on a Friday | generous buffer |
| Start of the holidays in Bavaria or Baden-Württemberg | considerably more time |
| Snow in the Allgäu | 30 minutes or more extra |
| Early flight with a strict deadline | choose a generous buffer |
Parking after a long drive
If you travel a long way, you appreciate short distances at the airport. Valet saves the transfer; shuttle is often cheaper for long trips. More: Valet or shuttle at Memmingen Airport and Choosing a parking service at Memmingen Airport.
From the Unterallgäu
From Mindelheim, Bad Wörishofen or Türkheim, the A96 runs directly west to the Memmingen-Ost exit. The drive is short. From Babenhausen, Krumbach or Illertissen you head south via federal roads or the A7.
From the Landsberg and Ammersee area
From Landsberg am Lech, the A96 takes you to the airport in around 45 minutes. From the Ammersee region you reach the A96 via country roads. In rush-hour traffic towards Munich the opposite direction is often busy; towards Memmingen traffic usually flows better.
From Garmisch-Partenkirchen
From the Werdenfelser Land, federal roads lead via Schongau or Füssen to the A7 or A96. The drive is long and demanding in winter. For some travellers from there, Munich Airport is a similar distance away; what matters is the connection.
Night-time roadworks
On the A96 and A7, work is often carried out at night. Check roadworks reports before an early flight.
Car-sharing
If several people are travelling from one place, car-sharing saves parking costs. Agree beforehand who drives and who books.
Weather in the mountains
In the Oberallgäu and the Ostallgäu, it can snow heavily at higher altitudes in winter while only rain falls in Memmingen. If you come from Oberstdorf, Pfronten or the Kleinwalsertal, plan correspondingly more time and check the road conditions the evening before.
In short
Whether from Munich, Swabia, the Allgäu, Lake Constance or Austria: with the right sat-nav address, a buffer for the A96 and A7 and a look at the weather and holidays, you will arrive relaxed in Memmingerberg.
From the Günzburg and Krumbach area
From Günzburg, the A8 runs west to Ulm and then the A7 south; alternatively, you go via Krumbach and federal roads towards Memmingen. Which route is faster depends on your starting point and the time of day.
From Wangen and the Westallgäu
From Wangen, Isny or Leutkirch you quickly reach the A96 and drive north-east to Memmingen. In winter the higher ground of the Westallgäu can be snow-covered.
Long-distance coaches and ride-sharing
Long-distance coaches run to Memmingen from some cities; from the station you take the bus to the airport. With a lot of luggage this is tiresome.
Have a good drive
Once you have found your route, you will drive even more relaxed on your next departure. Make a note of the actual driving time.
From Switzerland
From eastern Switzerland, for example from St. Gallen, the route leads via Bregenz and Lindau onto the A96. You need a vignette for the Austrian motorway and also for the Swiss one. There may be waiting times at the border. For Swiss travellers, Memmingen is mainly interesting for inexpensive direct flights.
From Heidenheim and East Württemberg
From Heidenheim, the A7 runs south via Ulm directly to the Memmingen junction. The route is well developed; during the holiday season there is a lot of southbound traffic on the A7.
Seasonal number plates
If you travel in a vehicle with seasonal number plates, make sure that the drive home also falls within the registration period.
Taking a break on the way
If you are travelling from Vorarlberg, Garmisch or the Ingolstadt area, you will be on the road for a while. A short break at a service area keeps you awake – especially on night-time drives to early flights.
Have a good drive
If you have questions about the last part of the route, the provider you booked will be happy to help with directions.
If you set off early, you usually arrive relaxed too – whichever direction you come from.
From Mindelheim and Bad Wörishofen
From the Kneipp spa town of Bad Wörishofen and from Mindelheim, the airport can be reached quickly via the A96. If you have been taking a spa cure here and then fly on holiday, you do not have far to go.

Note down your driving time
After your first drive, record how long it actually took – separately by time of day and season. On your next departure you can then plan with your own figures instead of estimates.
Have a good drive to Memmingerberg – and a good start to your trip!
And in snow, the usual rule applies: better to drive more slowly and arrive safely.
