Going on holiday from Dortmund Airport: season-by-season tips for valet and shuttle parking
Published on
For many international residents of the Ruhr, Dortmund Airport is not an occasional holiday airport but a year-round habit. In spring people fly to European cities, in summer families head south, in autumn there is a last week of sun, and in December thousands fly home to Poland, Romania, the UK or the Balkans for Christmas. Each season brings its own traffic, weather and crowds. This guide goes through the year season by season, then covers what applies to every trip.
Key points
- Spring: Easter holidays and city breaks – Friday traffic is the risk.
- Summer: the first NRW holiday weekend is the busiest of the year.
- Autumn: short holidays, early darkness, morning fog.
- Winter: Christmas trips home with heavy luggage.
- All year: book early, call once, bags before the phone on return.
No car parks can be booked through Friend-Park at Dortmund Airport yet.

Spring: Easter and city breaks
The Easter holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia send a first wave of families south. Between them, many young professionals and students fly to Barcelona, Rome or Budapest for long weekends. Those trips usually start on Friday afternoon, when the A40, the A1 and the B1 are full of commuters and weekend traffic. Leave early, and if you return late on Sunday, check that the provider's regular operating hours cover your landing. Outside them, handover may be possible for a one-off surcharge, or only the next morning.
Early summer: watch the football calendar
Before the summer break, the football season ends – but in August it starts again. On Borussia Dortmund home match days, the B1 near the stadium is jammed for hours. If your flight coincides with a match, take the A40 and A1 or the A45 and A44 instead. Routes in driving to Dortmund Airport.
Summer: the NRW holiday start
North Rhine-Westphalia's summer holidays move every year, sometimes starting in late June, sometimes mid-July. The first weekend is the busiest of the year at Dortmund Airport: early flights leave in quick succession, shuttles are full, the kerb is crowded. If your international school breaks up at a different time, use that. Otherwise book weeks ahead, arrive a little earlier than the airline minimum and stay patient. Families should read travelling with family from Dortmund.
Summer: heat and the parked car
A car that stands for two weeks in July can get very hot inside. Do not leave food, drinks, aerosols, lighters or electronics in it. Summer thunderstorms can bring hail; if that worries you, ask whether the provider has covered spaces.
Autumn: short holidays, dark mornings
The autumn holidays are short but popular for a last week of sun. Mornings are dark and sometimes foggy in the Ruhr valley and the Münsterland. Allow extra time, and use the flash when photographing your car at handover.
Winter: Christmas trips home
December is when many international families fly home. Suitcases are full of presents, flights are busy, and return dates sometimes slip because of the weather elsewhere. Book early, note bulky luggage in the remarks if you use a shuttle, and give a friend your booking number in case you need to extend. Leave a warm jacket, an ice scraper and a brush in the car for your return – coming back from Bucharest or Glasgow into a wet Ruhr night is no fun in a T-shirt.
Winter: snow in the Sauerland
The Ruhr itself rarely sees much snow, but the Sauerland does. If you live in Winterberg, Meschede or Arnsberg, the drive to the airport can start on snowy roads, and the A45 detours over country lanes are slower in winter. Add at least half an hour when snow is forecast and check the conditions the evening before.
All year: strict airlines and luggage
Several airlines at Dortmund are strict about bag size and weight. Weigh your suitcases at home; whatever is over the limit stays in the wardrobe, not in a car that will stand at the airport for two weeks. If you are flying home for Christmas and bringing presents back, keep space or a foldable bag for the return.
All year: choose valet or shuttle
Valet means handing over the car at the terminal kerb – ideal with children, luggage or little time. A shuttle means parking at the provider's site and taking a short bus. Compare both in valet or shuttle at Dortmund, and plan with reserving parking at Dortmund.
All year: bus or car?
Buses run between Dortmund city centre and the airport. If you live centrally and travel light, that can be enough. From the Sauerland, the Münsterland or the western Ruhr, the car with a parking service is usually simpler. See bus or car to Dortmund Airport.
All year: a week before
Compare your flight details with the parking booking: arrival time at the provider, return flight number, passengers. Airlines change times more often than people think. Field-by-field help: getting your booking details right.
All year: the evening before
- Read the confirmation, note the meeting point or site address.
- Save the provider's phone number.
- Check in online, weigh your bags if your airline is strict.
- Pack the car, valuables in hand luggage.
- Fill up or charge; check roadworks on the A1, A40 and A44.
All year: early flights
Many flights leave between six and seven. From Bochum, leave around four; from the Sauerland, earlier, because of the A45 detours. Consider a hotel near the airport if you live far away. Tips in early flights from Dortmund.
All year: one call
About half an hour out – for example when joining the A44 – a passenger calls the provider: booking number, plate, airline. In a jam, call immediately. See running late.
A summer morning, step by step
A family from Bochum, flight to Heraklion at 6:40 on the first Saturday of the summer holidays, valet booked.
| Time | Step |
|---|---|
| Fri 20:00 | Online check-in, car packed |
| Sat 4:00 | Leave Bochum via the A44 |
| 4:10 | Call to the provider |
| 4:30 | Photos, key handed over at the kerb |
| 4:45 | Bag drop |
| 5:20 | Through security |
At the handover
Photograph the car all round and the dashboard, take papers and valuables, hand over only the car key. See car security at Dortmund.
Someone at home who knows
Give a neighbour or colleague your booking number and the provider's phone number. If your return is delayed by days – a strike abroad, a sick child – they can help extend the booking.
Long trips
Three weeks or more: switch off all consumers, have an old battery tested, and keep enough range in an electric car. See long-term parking at Dortmund.
Coming back
Collect your bags, then call. Walk around the car before you leave. Late landing? Check the provider's hours in advance; see late arrivals at Dortmund and collecting your car after the trip.
When plans change
Illness, a cancelled flight, a strike: tell the provider straight away. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the service starts. See flight cancelled and changing a booking.
Conclusion
Every season at Dortmund Airport has its own twist – Friday traffic in spring, the NRW holiday rush in summer, dark mornings in autumn and Christmas luggage in winter. Plan around it, book early and call at the right moment, and the travel day stays relaxed. Valet and shuttle providers are listed on parking at Dortmund Airport.
