Many travellers get a lift to Frankfurt Airport and are picked up when they return. From the Rhine-Main area in particular the distance is short, and being welcomed after a long trip is nice. But Frankfurt has its peculiarities: three terminals with separate access roads, long walks inside the terminal and long-haul flights where a lot of time passes between landing and the exit. In this guide you will find everything drivers dropping off and picking up should know – and an honest calculation of when your own parking space makes more sense.
Key facts at a glance
- Clarify the terminal first: Terminals 1, 2 and 3 have separate drop-off roads, and Terminal 3 has its own access road in the south.
- For long-haul flights, 45 to 75 minutes often pass between landing and the exit.
- Only stop briefly on drop-off roads; to wait, go to the car park of the arrivals terminal.
- Drop-off and pick-up mean driving the route four times – an inexpensive parking space is often hardly more expensive.
Step one: the right terminal
At Frankfurt Airport every trip starts with the question: which terminal? Terminals 1 and 2 are in the north, Terminal 3 in the south of the site with its own access road. If you drive to the wrong terminal, you lose a lot of time. Check the terminal in the travellers’ booking, in the airline app or on the departures or arrivals board on frankfurt-airport.com. More in the guide Terminals at Frankfurt Airport.
Dropping off: driving someone to their flight
Follow the signs to the departures level of your terminal. There you can stop briefly so travellers can get out with their luggage. Stopping is only intended for the moment of getting out. The airport publishes the current rules and any fees for the drop-off roads. If you want to help with check-in or say goodbye without rushing, park briefly in the car park.
Plan the drive so that travellers meet their airline’s recommendation. Take the traffic at the Frankfurter Kreuz into account. More in the guide When should I be at Frankfurt Airport?
Picking up: estimating the arrival time realistically
Time passes after landing: taxiing to the stand, disembarking, possibly a bus ride from the apron, passport control for non-Schengen flights, the baggage belt, customs. In Frankfurt, with many long-haul flights and long distances, the rule of thumb is:
- Schengen flight, hand luggage only: 20 to 30 minutes
- Schengen flight with a suitcase: 30 to 45 minutes
- Long-haul with passport control and a suitcase: 45 to 75 minutes, more at peak times
Track the flight online and only set off once the landing time is confirmed. Ask the travellers to send you a message when they have their luggage.
Where to wait?
The car parks at the arrivals terminal are suitable for waiting. Standing on the drop-off road for longer is not allowed. In the arrivals hall, screens show which exit a flight arrives at. Agree on a specific meeting point, because the arrivals areas in Frankfurt are large.
An honest calculation: drop-off and pick-up vs. parking yourself
For a one-way distance of 60 kilometres:
- Drop-off: 120 kilometres (there and back)
- Pick-up: another 120 kilometres
- Total: 240 kilometres instead of 120 kilometres when parking yourself
- Plus short-term parking fees, possible fees on the drop-off road and several hours of the driver’s time – with long-haul flights often at inconvenient times
An inexpensive parking space for a week is often in a similar range. And you are independent of delays and times. Costs at a glance: How much does parking at Frankfurt Airport cost?
When drop-off and pick-up make sense
- Living near the airport
- One direction only, for example getting a lift and returning by ICE train
- No car of your own
- A shared journey that is going that way anyway
When parking yourself is better
- Long-haul flights with uncertain arrival times
- Very early departures or late arrivals
- A long journey, for example from northern Hesse, the Palatinate or Lower Franconia
- Families with lots of luggage – with valet parking at Frankfurt Airport you hand over the car near the terminal

Picking up by train
If you are picking someone up without a car, take the S-Bahn or a regional train to the regional station at Terminal 1, or the ICE to the long-distance station. The Sky Line continues to Terminals 2 and 3. More in the guide By train to Frankfurt Airport.
Picking up travellers with assistance
If the person you are picking up has booked assistance, they will be accompanied to the exit or an agreed point. Agree on the meeting point in advance. More in the guide Accessible travel from Frankfurt Airport.
Taxis and ride services
There are taxi ranks at all terminals. For longer distances the costs quickly add up – compare them with the final price of a parking space for the outward and return journey.
In case of delay
If the arriving flight is delayed, wait at home or set off later. If the flight is diverted to another airport because of the night-flight rules, the airline usually takes care of onward transport; check the airline’s information. More in the guide Flight delayed or cancelled at Frankfurt Airport.
Tips for a relaxed pick-up
- Note the flight number, landing time and terminal
- Check the status before setting off
- Agree on a specific meeting point
- Phone charged
- Wait in the car park instead of on the drop-off road
- Allow plenty of time for long-haul flights
Safety on the drop-off road
The drop-off roads are busy. Let travellers get out on the pavement side and drive on promptly. Unattended vehicles are not tolerated for security reasons.
Terminal 3: special features for drop-off and pick-up
Since Terminal 3 opened in April 2026, people dropping off and picking up in Frankfurt need to rethink. The new terminal is in the south of the site and has its own access road, separate from Terminals 1 and 2. If you habitually drive to the Terminal 1 drop-off road even though the flight departs from Terminal 3, you lose a lot of time – walking between the buildings is not a sensible option, and the Sky Line is no option for drivers picking someone up. So always check which terminal applies before setting off. Many airlines that used to be handled in Terminal 2 have moved.
Picking up after long-haul flights
With arrivals from North America, Asia or Africa in particular, several large aircraft often land in Frankfurt in quick succession. Passport control and baggage belts are then very busy. When picking someone up, expect more like 60 to 75 minutes between landing and the exit, sometimes more. Ask the travellers to send a quick message after passport control and after baggage reclaim. That way you can decide when to walk from the car park to the arrivals hall or drive to the drop-off road.
Compare costs realistically
For a fair decision between a lift and parking, it is worth taking an honest look at the total costs. In addition to fuel and wear for driving the route four times, there are short-term parking fees while waiting, possible fees on the drop-off road and, above all, the driver’s time. When returning late in the evening from a long-haul flight, that can be a whole evening. Parking booked in advance with a final price including service fee, on the other hand, is predictable. Compare both options with your real figures – the difference is often smaller than you think.
If the pick-up falls through
Plans change: the person picking you up is ill, the flight is postponed to the next day or diverted because of the night-flight rules. If you have left your own car with a provider, you are independent of this. How the return to your car works is explained in the guide Returning: collecting your car at Frankfurt Airport.
Dropping off with children and lots of luggage
If you are dropping off a family with a pushchair and several suitcases, you need a few minutes to unload. So don’t stop at the crowded spot right in front of the entrance, but a little further on where there is more space, and unload quickly. Luggage trolleys are available at the terminals. Tips for the travel day with children are in the guide Travelling with children at Frankfurt Airport.
Conclusion: know the terminal, get the timing right
Dropping off and picking up at Frankfurt Airport works if the terminal is clear and the timing is right. With long distances, long-haul flights and off-peak times, your own parking space booked in advance is often more relaxed and hardly more expensive.
