Booking parking at Hamburg Airport: twelve questions and answers on getting the details right

Published on · by the Friend-Park editorial team · How we work

Person filling in a form on a laptop – entering your parking booking details correctly for Hamburg Airport

Booking parking for Hamburg Airport takes minutes. Yet the same questions keep coming up – in emails to customer service, in calls to providers and in reviews when something went wrong. If you're new to Hamburg, perhaps on an assignment at Airbus, in the port or at one of the city's agencies, the German-style booking form can raise even more questions. We've collected the twelve most common and answer them in turn, from the time to the plate of a company car. Fill in the form correctly once and you'll have a clear head on travel day.

Key facts at a glance

  • Arrival means the time you reach the provider, not your take-off.
  • Give Terminal 1 or 2, because the forecourts are separate.
  • Enter the flight number of the final leg into Hamburg.
  • List all passengers and the correct plate.
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the service starts.

1. What does the “arrival” field mean?

It means the time you reach the provider with your car. For valet parking, that's the meeting point at the terminal; for shuttle parking, the provider's car park, often in Norderstedt, Langenhorn or Hummelsbüttel. Your departure time doesn't belong here. The provider plans drivers and buses around this time.

2. How do I work out the right time?

Backwards. Example: your flight to London leaves at 07:10. Many airlines recommend arriving two hours early for European flights, so 05:10 at check-in. With valet, allow about a quarter of an hour for the handover and walk – enter 04:55. With shuttle parking, add check-in, the bus and the transfer – enter around 04:20 to 04:30. How long you need in the terminal depends on the airline and season. More in reserving and planning parking at Hamburg.

3. Does the Elbe Tunnel affect the time?

Not for the booking, but very much for when you leave home. The arrival time in the booking is the moment you're with the provider. When you need to set off depends on your route. Coming from the south via the A7, build in a buffer for the tunnel.

4. Do I have to give my terminal?

Yes, if the form asks – otherwise in the comments field. Hamburg has Terminals 1 and 2 with separate forecourts, linked by the Airport Plaza. The terminal decides the valet meeting point and shuttle stops. Mention it again when you call on the day. An overview: finding your way around the terminals.

5. What do I enter for the return?

The scheduled landing time in Hamburg and the return flight number. With the number, the provider can track delays. For late evening flights this is especially important, because Hamburg has night-time restrictions and flights just before midnight are often tightly timed. More under delayed return flights.

6. I'm flying back with a connection – which number?

The flight number of the final leg, i.e. the flight that lands in Hamburg. Coming back from Toulouse via Frankfurt, for example, it's the Frankfurt–Hamburg flight.

7. I don't know my return flight number yet. What now?

Enter the expected return date and planned time and add the number once you have it – by changing the booking or telling the provider directly. On business trips with an open return, that's normal.

8. How many passengers should I enter?

Everyone in the car who will ride the shuttle – babies and children included. Many providers include a set number of passengers and charge for extra ones. If fewer people fly back, enter the higher number and note the difference. Details: passengers on the shuttle.

9. What if I come in a different car?

Change the plate before you travel. Many car parks use plate recognition; a wrong plate means a closed barrier. That also applies to hire cars, company cars or a colleague's car. Help under correcting wrong details.

10. Which vehicle size do I choose?

Many offers let you choose standard, large/SUV, van or transporter. The provider decides which classes it accepts, the maximum dimensions and any surcharge. With a seven-seater, roof box or van, pick the right class. More in parking a large vehicle at Hamburg.

11. What is the comments field for?

Anything that doesn't fit elsewhere: your terminal if there's no field, a wheelchair on the shuttle, a child seat for the bus, bulky luggage, a different person collecting the car. Not for changes to date, time or passengers – those belong in the proper fields.

12. What do I do after submitting?

The confirmation arrives by email. Read it straight away: date, times, terminal, plate, passengers, address or meeting point. Fix any mistakes immediately. Free cancellation is possible up to 24 hours before the service starts. No confirmation? Check your spam folder and see confirmation not received.

Three examples from Hamburg and around

Family from Buxtehude, summer holidays

Departure Saturday 06:40 from Terminal 1, four people, shuttle. Arrival at the shuttle car park at 04:00. Leave Buxtehude at 03:00 with a buffer for the Elbe Tunnel. Four passengers, van class, terminal in the comments.

Couple from Kiel, city break

Departure Friday 17:25 to Lisbon, two people, valet. Drive south on the A7, arrive at the meeting point at 15:30. Return Monday 22:40 with flight number; checked beforehand that the provider still works its regular operating hours then.

Engineer on a business trip

Departure Tuesday 06:50 to Toulouse, return open. Valet, arrival 06:15, estimated return date, flight number to follow. More in business travel from Hamburg.

Special case: early morning departures

The first flights leave Hamburg early. For a 06:00 departure you'll be at the provider around 04:00, and the booking starts that morning. If you arrive the evening before and sleep at an airport hotel, it starts that evening. With such times, check the regular operating hours; outside them, some providers take cars for a one-off surcharge, others don't operate. Tips in early flights from Hamburg.

Special case: booking for guests

If visitors drive your car to the airport and leave it there, or you book for parents flying home, the booking must fit the person travelling: their name, their mobile number, the right plate. Forward the confirmation and explain briefly when to call.

Why the details matter so much

On a holiday morning, a Hamburg parking provider looks after dozens of customers within a few hours. Each booking is a small work order: when must a driver be where? How many seats does the next shuttle need? Which car belongs to which booking? When the details are right, everything runs smoothly. When they're not, the team has to improvise – and you notice first, with a wait at the forecourt or a full bus.

Holidays in three states

Hamburg Airport serves travellers from Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and northern Lower Saxony. When those states' holidays start together, the first weekend is especially busy. Allow more generous arrival times and book early.

A week before: a quick check

Airlines change departure times and terminals. A week before your trip, compare your flight booking with your parking booking and fix any differences. See changing a booking and cancelling or changing parking at Hamburg.

Conclusion

Twelve questions, one simple rule: enter what will actually happen on travel day – when you'll be with the provider, at which terminal, in which car, with how many people and on which flight you'll return. Then the handover in Fuhlsbüttel runs smoothly. All offers are on parking at Hamburg Airport.
