Half-timbered houses along the canal in Strasbourg – from Alsace to Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport

Between northern Alsace and Baden-Airpark there is only the Rhine. For people from Haguenau, Bischwiller, Seltz or Soufflenheim, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport can therefore sometimes be reached faster than their own airport at Strasbourg-Entzheim – and some connections only exist on the German side. If you travel from France, however, there are a few additional things to consider: crossing the Rhine, border checks, language questions when booking and the drive back late in the evening. This guide answers the most important questions.

Key facts at a glance

  • Travel via Rhine bridges or ferries – check timetables and restrictions.
  • Take a valid ID, also for possible border checks.
  • Enter the French licence plate in full in the booking.
  • For a late return, think of the ferry times and know the bridge as an alternative.

Why Baden-Airpark is interesting for people from Alsace

The airport is in Rheinmünster, only a few kilometres from the bank of the Rhine. From the Haguenau area the route is often shorter than to Strasbourg-Entzheim, which lies south-west of Strasbourg. Then there is the range of flights: from Baden-Airpark, holiday and low-cost airlines fly to destinations that are not offered from Strasbourg, or not directly. For travellers from the north of Alsace, it is therefore worth looking across the Rhine when planning a trip.

Across the Rhine: bridges

Several Rhine bridges connect northern Alsace with Baden. Which one is fastest for you depends on where you live. The bridges are open around the clock and are therefore the reliable choice for very early departures and late returns. In rush hour the approach roads can get busier, because many cross-border commuters travel between France and Germany.

Across the Rhine: ferries

In this area, Rhine ferries also operate between Alsace and Baden. They are a charming and often short connection, but have operating hours that do not cover every early flight. During high water, dense fog or technical problems, the service may be restricted or suspended. Check the current times before your trip and know a bridge as an alternative. For the return late in the evening, the bridge is usually the safe choice.

ID and border checks

The Schengen Agreement generally applies between France and Germany. Nevertheless, there are repeatedly checks at the border that can lead to waiting times. Take your identity card or passport with you – you need it for the flight anyway. When crossing the Rhine, plan a few minutes’ buffer for possible checks.

Booking with a French licence plate

When booking, enter your vehicle’s licence plate in full, exactly as it appears on the plate. This helps the provider identify your car. You should also enter your mobile number with the French country code correctly so that the provider can reach you on your return. Make sure your mobile contract allows calls and messages from Germany without problems.

Language

Most parking providers around Baden-Airpark communicate in German, some also in English or French. If you are unsure, ask before booking. The most important details – meeting point, time, phone number – are in the confirmation. A translation app on your phone helps with questions.

Driving service or bus?

The same criteria apply to travellers from Alsace as to everyone else: for short trips, early departures and a lot of luggage the driving service is convenient; for long trips the bus model is often cheaper. Because the journey across the Rhine already takes time, many appreciate short distances at the airport. More: Valet or shuttle at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport.

An example from Haguenau

A couple from Haguenau flies to the Canary Islands for a week during the French autumn holidays. Departure early in the morning, return a week later in the evening. For the outward journey they take the bridge, because the ferry is not yet running so early, and plan a buffer for possible checks. At the airport they hand the car over to a driving service. For the drive back in the evening they take the bridge again. The sequence is an example; ferry times and checks change.

Watch the holiday periods

The school holidays in France and in Baden-Württemberg do not always coincide. When both sides are on holiday at the same time, Baden-Airpark is particularly busy. If you fly at such times, book your parking space early. More: Reserving a parking space at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport.

Paying and cancelling

At Friend-Park you pay online when booking. You can cancel free of charge up to one day before the booked start of parking. The confirmation comes by email. More: Cancelling or rebooking parking at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport.

The return across the Rhine

After landing you collect your luggage, contact the parking service and drive back. Late in the evening the ferries often no longer run; then take one of the bridges. Check the traffic and possible closures before setting off. In autumn, fog over the Rhine and the plain can severely restrict visibility. More: Late arrival at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport.

Refuelling and charging

Fuel prices differ between France and Germany. Some people fill up before the border, others after it. If you drive electric, plan your range so that you can get home without stopping after your return, or ask the provider about a charging option.

Insurance and breakdown cover

Before your trip, check whether your car insurance and breakdown service also apply in Germany. Within the EU this is usually the case, but the details differ. The phone number of your breakdown service for assistance abroad belongs in your mobile.

Cross-border commuters know the route

Many people commute daily between Alsace and Baden for work, many of them to the industrial plants between Rastatt and Bühl or to the business park at the airport itself. If you are one of them, you already know the bridges, the peak times and the shortcuts. For everyone else: at the start of shifts early in the morning and at the end of the working day in the afternoon, the approaches to the Rhine bridges are busier. A flight in the late morning often falls exactly into a quieter phase.

The area around Seltz and Lauterbourg

For people from the far north-east of Alsace, for example from Seltz, Lauterbourg or Wissembourg, Baden-Airpark is particularly well located. From here, the drive to Strasbourg-Entzheim is considerably longer, while the Rhine is only a few kilometres away. Many families from this area therefore use the airport for holiday flights to the south.

French school holidays

In France the school holidays are staggered by zone; Alsace belongs to one of these zones. The autumn, winter and spring holidays often fall at different times from those in Baden-Württemberg. When both holiday calendars coincide, Baden-Airpark gets particularly busy. If you fly then, reserve your parking space early.

Emergency numbers

The European emergency number 112 works on both sides of the Rhine. Also save the number of your parking provider and that of your breakdown service before you set off.

Euro on both sides

One advantage for travellers from Alsace: on both sides of the Rhine people pay in euros, and booking at Friend-Park works online with the usual payment methods. For additional services on site, ask beforehand which payment methods the provider accepts.

By bus from the German side

If you come from Alsace without a car, you reach the airport via a German railway station, such as Baden-Baden, and from there by bus. With luggage and at early hours this is awkward. For most travellers from across the Rhine, the car therefore remains the more practical choice.

Summary

For travellers from northern Alsace, Baden-Airpark is a real alternative. If you plan the Rhine crossing, carry a valid ID, enter your licence plate correctly and think of the ferry times, you will travel relaxed. Whether offers can already be booked via Friend-Park is shown at Parking at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport. You will find routes from other regions in Getting to Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport from the region.
