Karlsruhe Palace with its palace garden – travelling to Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport from the region

Baden-Airpark’s catchment area is larger than many people think. It extends from the southern Palatinate via Karlsruhe and the northern Black Forest to the Ortenau – and across the Rhine into northern Alsace. Each of these regions has its own route to the airport, its own bottlenecks and its own peculiarities, from the ferry across the Rhine to the winding road through the Murg valley. This guide goes through the most important routes and gives tips on the right time buffer. On the day of travel it does not replace a sat nav with real-time data, but it helps with planning.

Key facts at a glance

  • The A5 and B500 are the main access roads; from the east the A8 is added.
  • Bottlenecks: the Karlsruhe interchange, roadworks, holiday traffic.
  • Alsace: bridges and ferries across the Rhine, check the timetables.
  • Choose the buffer according to route and time.

From Karlsruhe and the surrounding area

From Karlsruhe city centre, Durlach, Ettlingen or Rheinstetten, the way leads to the A5 towards Basel. At the Karlsruhe interchange, traffic from several directions converges; at peak times it is often congested here. Then you continue past Rastatt to the Baden-Baden exit. If you live in the west of Karlsruhe, for example in Rheinstetten, you can also use country roads through the Rhine plain that lead south via Durmersheim, Rastatt and Iffezheim. This route is not always faster, but avoids traffic jams on the motorway.

From Bruchsal and the Kraichgau

From Bruchsal you drive south on the A5, past Karlsruhe. From the Kraichgau, for example from Bretten, you reach the A5 via country roads or the Karlsruhe interchange via the A8. The route is longer, but easy to drive outside peak times.

From Pforzheim and the Enz district

From Pforzheim the A8 leads west to the Karlsruhe interchange, where you switch to the A5 towards Basel. The A8 between Pforzheim and Karlsruhe is often congested in rush hour, and there are tailbacks at the interchange. If you drive early in the morning, you usually get through quickly. Alternatively, country roads lead via Ettlingen into the Rhine valley.

From the northern Black Forest

From Gaggenau and Gernsbach the B462 leads through the Murg valley to Rastatt and from there to the A5. From Calw, Bad Wildbad or Freudenstadt the drive is longer; some use the Black Forest High Road via Baden-Baden. The routes through the Black Forest are scenic, but winding and sometimes snowy at higher altitudes in winter. In snow and ice, plan considerably more time and check road conditions.

From Baden-Baden, Bühl and Sinzheim

From Baden-Baden the B500 leads directly west to the airport – the shortest approach in the catchment area. From Bühl and Bühlertal you come via the A5 or via country roads through Stollhofen or Söllingen. From Sinzheim it is only a few kilometres. For travellers from here, it is also worth considering getting a lift.

From the Ortenau

From Offenburg, Achern, Kehl or Lahr you drive north on the A5 to the Baden-Baden exit. The A5 is often less congested here than around Karlsruhe, but there are roadworks on this section too. From the Kinzig valley you come via the B33 to Offenburg and then onto the A5. For travellers from the southern Ortenau district, Strasbourg Airport may also be an option.

From the southern Palatinate

From Landau, Wörth or Germersheim the way leads over the Rhine bridge at Karlsruhe-Maxau to the Karlsruhe side and then to the A5. The bridge is a well-known bottleneck in rush hour. From Wörth and the Bienwald, there is also the option of driving south on the Alsatian side and crossing via one of the more southerly Rhine bridges.

From Alsace

Baden-Airpark is only a few kilometres from the Rhine. From Haguenau, Bischwiller, Soufflenheim or Seltz you reach the airport via the Rhine bridges in the area or with one of the Rhine ferries that operate at certain times. Ferries may be restricted during high water or fog. More in Parking for travellers from Alsace.

From Rastatt and Iffezheim

From Rastatt the A5 or the country road via Iffezheim leads south. Iffezheim lies north of the airport; on big race days at the racecourse there is more traffic. A look at the event calendar is worthwhile.

How much buffer?

SituationRecommendation
Baden-Baden, Bühl, Sinzheimsmall buffer
Karlsruhe and Pforzheim in rush hourgenerous buffer for the interchange
Northern Black Forest in wintersignificantly more time
Alsace by ferrycheck the timetable, bridge as an alternative
Start of the holidays in Baden-Württembergmore time for road and terminal

Rush hour on the Upper Rhine

Around Karlsruhe, traffic peaks in the morning between about six and nine and in the afternoon between about 15:00 and 18:00. If your flight is in the late morning, you may drive right into rush hour. Then plan generously or leave earlier and have a coffee in the terminal.

Holiday traffic from the north

The A5 is one of the main routes to Switzerland, France and Italy. On holiday weekends, especially when several federal states start at the same time, there is additional holiday traffic on the A5. This also affects travellers to Baden-Airpark.

An overnight stay beforehand?

For travellers from the southern Black Forest, the Kraichgau or the Palatinate, an overnight stay near the airport can make sense with a very early flight. There are hotels in Baden-Baden, Bühl, Rastatt and Rheinmünster. You then book the parking space from the morning of departure.

Parking after a long journey

If you travel a long way, you appreciate short distances at the airport. A driving service saves the transfer; the bus model is often cheaper for long trips. More: Valet or shuttle at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport and Choosing a parking service at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport.

From Kehl and Strasbourg

For travellers from Kehl and Strasbourg, Baden-Airpark lies to the north on the German side of the Rhine. Via the Europe Bridge or the bridges at Kehl you reach the German side and then drive north on the A5 to the Baden-Baden exit. For many people in Strasbourg their own airport is closer; you drive to Rheinmünster when the right connection departs from there.

From Heidelberg and Mannheim

From the Kurpfalz the route via the A5 is long. For travellers from Heidelberg and Mannheim, Frankfurt is often closer. Nevertheless, some drive to Baden-Airpark if their destination is only offered there or the connection is cheaper. Expect traffic jams around Karlsruhe.

From the Murg valley

From Forbach, Gernsbach and Gaggenau the B462 leads down the valley to Rastatt. The route is winding and busy in rush hour, especially around the factory site in Gaggenau.

From Ettlingen and the Alb valley

From Ettlingen you reach the A5 via the Ettlingen junction and drive south from there. From the Alb valley, for example from Marxzell or Bad Herrenalb, country roads lead down the valley to Ettlingen. In winter the higher areas of the northern Black Forest can be snowy.

Back after landing

For the drive home the same applies in reverse. Late in the evening the roads are clear; at night, roadworks on the A5 can force diversions. A look at the traffic before setting off helps.

From Pforzheim via a detour through Ettlingen

If the A8 towards Karlsruhe is congested, some people from Pforzheim take country roads to Ettlingen and join the A5 there. Whether that is faster depends on the traffic – a sat nav with real-time data helps you decide.

Summary

Almost all routes lead via the A5 and the B500. Know the bottlenecks on your route and plan according to the time of day.

Frequently asked questions

Above all the A5 to the Baden-Baden exit and then the B500. From the east, the A8 to the Karlsruhe interchange is added.

That depends on the route and time. Plan generously at the Karlsruhe interchange, at the start of the holidays and with roadworks.

Depending on where you live, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Strasbourg or Basel-Mulhouse. What matters is the right connection.
