The A5 runs like a backbone through the Upper Rhine: from Frankfurt via Karlsruhe and Baden-Baden to Freiburg and Basel. For almost everyone driving to Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport, it is the decisive route. You leave at the Baden-Baden exit, then head west on the B500 until the signs to Baden-Airpark branch off. That sounds simple, and usually it is. But between Bruchsal and Offenburg there are sections where traffic likes to back up, and the last kilometres to the car park depend on where you have booked. This guide describes the approach from all directions and gives tips for a relaxed start.
Key facts at a glance
- Main route: A5 to the Baden-Baden exit, then the B500 and the signs.
- Traffic spots: the Karlsruhe interchange, sections with roadworks, the start of the holidays.
- Autumn: fog in the Rhine plain early in the morning.
- Enter the address from the booking in the sat nav, not just the airport name.
From the north: Karlsruhe, Bruchsal, Mannheim
From Karlsruhe and northern Baden you drive south on the A5. At the Karlsruhe interchange the A5 and A8 meet; traffic from Stuttgart, Pforzheim, Frankfurt and Mannheim converges here. At peak times the interchange is one of the bottlenecks of the region. If you come from Karlsruhe city centre, you reach the A5 via the southern bypass or the junctions in the south of the city. Then you continue past Ettlingen and Rastatt to the Baden-Baden exit. From Mannheim and Heidelberg the route is correspondingly longer; for some travellers from the Kurpfalz, Frankfurt is then also within reach.
From the east: Pforzheim and Stuttgart
From Pforzheim the A8 leads west to the Karlsruhe interchange, where you switch to the A5 towards Basel. From the Stuttgart area the route is similar, but for many people in Stuttgart their own airport is closer; you drive to Baden-Airpark when the right connection departs from there. If you come from the northern Black Forest, for example from Calw or Freudenstadt, you can also travel via country roads through the Murg valley or via the Black Forest High Road and Baden-Baden – scenic, but slower.
From the south: Ortenau and Freiburg
From Offenburg, Lahr or Achern you drive north on the A5. The Baden-Baden exit lies north of Bühl. Some travellers from Bühl and the surrounding area also use country roads via Stollhofen or Söllingen to approach the airport directly from the south. From Freiburg the route is long; for travellers from the Breisgau, Basel-Mulhouse Airport is also an option.
From Alsace
Baden-Airpark is only a few kilometres from the Rhine. If you come from Haguenau, Bischwiller or northern Alsace, you cross the river via one of the Rhine bridges in the area or take one of the Rhine ferries that operate at certain times. Check timetables and possible restrictions during high water before your trip. More in Parking for travellers from Alsace.
The last kilometres
After the Baden-Baden exit you drive west on the B500. The road passes Sinzheim and Hügelsheim; the turn-off to the airport is signposted. If you want to go to the airport’s parking areas, follow the signs to the terminal. If you have booked with a private provider, however, follow the address from the confirmation, because many sites are located in neighbouring municipalities or in the business park and are reached via their own access roads. A common mistake is to enter only “Baden-Airpark” in the sat nav and then end up in front of the terminal while the meeting point is elsewhere.
Traffic traps and how to avoid them
The A5 is one of the busiest motorways in the south-west. Besides the Karlsruhe interchange, roadworks, accidents and heavy lorry traffic repeatedly cause delays. It gets particularly busy on the first weekend of the Baden-Württemberg summer holidays, when holidaymakers from the north are also heading towards Switzerland and France, and on Friday afternoons. If you travel at these times, plan generously. A sat nav with real-time data helps to spot traffic jams in good time; alternative routes via the country roads of the Rhine plain are possible, but not always faster.
Fog in the Rhine plain
In autumn and winter, dense fog often lies over the Rhine plain, especially early in the morning. Visibility can then drop to a few dozen metres. If you have an early flight, drive more slowly in fog and plan extra time. Only use fog lights and the rear fog light when visibility requires it.
Major events in the area
On race days at the Iffezheim racecourse, at major events in Baden-Baden or at trade fairs in Karlsruhe, some roads carry more traffic. Iffezheim is only a few kilometres north of the airport. A look at the region’s event calendars when planning your trip is enough to allow a little more time on such days.
Refuelling and charging
Along the A5 there are service areas with petrol stations and fast chargers. Plan so that you can get home without stopping after your return – after a late return flight nobody wants to look for a petrol station. If you drive electric and travel a long way, ask the parking provider about charging options during your trip.
How much time to plan?
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Short journey from Baden-Baden or Bühl | small buffer |
| Karlsruhe in rush hour | generous buffer for the interchange |
| Start of the holidays in Baden-Württemberg | significantly more time for road and terminal |
| Fog early in the morning | drive more slowly, increase the buffer |
| Arriving from Alsace by ferry | check the timetable, know the alternative via a bridge |
If you are running late
If you are stuck in traffic, call the parking provider and say when you expect to arrive. With the driving service this is particularly important so that the employee can plan. If it gets tight for the flight, speak to the airline directly at the airport. More: frequently asked questions about delays on the way.
With a motorhome or trailer
If you arrive with a large vehicle, you need a provider with suitable spaces. State the length and height when booking and ask whether the access road is suitable. More: frequently asked questions about large vehicles.
From military airfield to holiday airport
If you drive there for the first time, you will be surprised at how extensive the site is. The explanation lies in its history: until the 1990s this was a base of the Canadian air force, after which the area was converted to civilian use. The long runway, wide access roads and a lot of space around them date from that time. For drivers this means that even on the Airpark site itself there may still be a few minutes’ drive before you reach the terminal or your parking business. On the site, follow the signs and your booking address.
Factory traffic and shift changes
Around Rastatt, Gaggenau and Bühl thousands of people work in large industrial plants, often in shifts. At shift changes early in the morning, in the afternoon and late in the evening, traffic on the feeder roads to the A5 increases noticeably. If you travel at exactly these times, allow a few extra minutes – especially at the Rastatt and Bühl junctions.
Shopping traffic towards the Rhine
On the French side of the Rhine there is a large outlet centre that attracts many visitors from Baden on Saturdays and before public holidays. Part of this traffic uses the same roads towards the Rhine that also lead to the airport. On Saturday mornings, the B500 west of the motorway can therefore be busier than on a Tuesday.
Car sharing with neighbours
If neighbours or friends are going on holiday at the same time, sharing a car to Baden-Airpark may be worthwhile. One space instead of two saves money, and the drive through the night is more entertaining for two. Agree beforehand who drives, how the luggage is distributed and who makes the booking.
And then parking
Once at the airport, you can choose between the airport’s areas, a driving service and a car park with a bus. Which solution suits your trip is described in Parking options at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport. You will find routes from more distant places in Getting to Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport from the region. Whether offers can already be booked via Friend-Park is shown at Parking at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport.
