Gepackter Koffer mit Sommerkleidung – Parken in den Ferien am Flughafen Frankfurt

When the school holidays begin in Hesse, Frankfurt Airport gets crowded. On top of that come travellers from Rhineland-Palatinate, Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia who choose Frankfurt for its large range of flights. Parking spaces, check-in counters and security checkpoints are then in high demand, and there are more traffic jams around the Frankfurter Kreuz. In this guide you will learn when the Hesse holidays are, why booking early saves real money, which type of parking works best and how to plan your departure and return days stress-free.

Key facts at a glance

  • Frankfurt is particularly busy at the start and end of the Hesse holidays – and those of neighbouring states.
  • Book parking straight after your flight; at Friend-Park it can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before the start.
  • Compare final prices including service fee, not just base prices.
  • On the day of travel, allow much more buffer for the Frankfurter Kreuz, check-in and security.

School holiday dates in Hesse

According to the Hesse Ministry of Education, the following school holidays are coming up:

  • Christmas holidays 2026/27: 23.12.2026 to 12.01.2027
  • Easter holidays 2027: 22.03. to 02.04.2027
  • Summer holidays 2027: 28.06. to 06.08.2027
  • Autumn holidays 2027: 04.10. to 16.10.2027
  • Christmas holidays 2027/28: 23.12.2027 to 11.01.2028

The ministry’s information is binding. Because many travellers from other federal states fly via Frankfurt, peak periods often extend beyond the Hesse dates. Long weekends, Whitsun and public holidays create further peaks.

Why booking early saves money

Parking spaces around the airport are limited. At the start of the holidays, good and inexpensive offers are often taken weeks in advance. If you turn up spontaneously, you often end up in the terminal car park at the regular rate – which can be much more expensive for a two-week holiday.

At Friend-Park you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before the booked start. Booking early therefore carries hardly any risk. Our tip: book your parking on the same day as your flight. Start here: Find holiday parking at Frankfurt Airport.

Which type of parking suits the holidays?

Long trips: watch the daily rate

Holiday trips from Frankfurt are often long – two or three weeks, or even more for long-haul travel. The days then add up, and the price difference between offers becomes large. The guide Long-term parking at Frankfurt Airport gives an overview of costs for long stays.

Valet parking for families

With children and lots of luggage, valet parking at Frankfurt Airport is particularly convenient: handover near the terminal, no reloading, straight to check-in. State your terminal when booking – Frankfurt has three.

Shuttle parking

Shuttle providers are often inexpensive. During the holidays, however, the buses are very busy; allow more time for the transfer and state the number of people and your terminal.

Compare the final price

At Friend-Park you see the final price including service fee – matching the provider’s payment method. Add-on services such as charging an electric car are optional and shown separately. More about costs in the guide How much does parking at Frankfurt Airport cost?

The start of the holidays: planning your departure day

  • More buffer at the Frankfurter Kreuz: at the start of the holidays the A3 and A5 are busy – allow an extra 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Check your terminal: especially since Terminal 3 opened – see Terminals at Frankfurt Airport.
  • Online check-in: saves you the longest queue.
  • Go to security early: straight on after dropping off your luggage.
  • Call the provider: about 30 minutes before arrival.

How to calculate is explained in the guide When should I be at Frankfurt Airport?

Families during the holidays

Documents for the children, pushchairs, baby food, entertainment: all the tips are in the guide Travelling with children at Frankfurt Airport. For long-haul trips with children, it is worth checking entry requirements early.

The return day

At the end of the holidays, many people return at the same time. Baggage belts, passport controls and shuttles are full. Give your return flight number when booking and contact the provider after baggage reclaim – stating your terminal. More in the guide Returning: collecting your car at Frankfurt Airport.

Summer holidays: heat and thunderstorms

In summer, afternoon thunderstorms can delay flight operations. Allow a buffer for evening return flights and let the provider know if it gets late. For your car: a sunshade on the windscreen, no sprays or electronics inside.

Christmas: wintry weather

Around Christmas, wintry weather can affect roads and flight operations. Allow more time and make sure you have winter tyres, antifreeze and a charged battery. Tips in the guide Preparing your car before your holiday.

The best days to fly

It is usually busiest on the first weekend of the holidays and the last weekend before school starts. If you fly a few days later or set off midweek, you will often find quieter terminals and a wider choice of parking. Midday is often more relaxed than early morning.

Coins for frequent-flying families

With a Friend-Park account you receive one coin for every full euro of booking value; one coin is worth one cent. Coins can be redeemed for up to ten percent of the price of your next booking. More in the FAQ on coins.

Checklist for holiday parking

  • Parking booked straight afterwards (free cancellation up to 24 h beforehand)
  • Final prices including service fee compared
  • Terminal, number of people and return flight number provided
  • Extra buffer for the Frankfurter Kreuz

Keep an eye on other states’ holidays

Frankfurt Airport has a huge catchment area. Besides travellers from Hesse, many holidaymakers come from Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and parts of North Rhine-Westphalia and Thuringia. Their holidays start and end on different dates. In practice this means the airport is very busy for many weeks during the summer months, not just at the start of the Hesse holidays. Long weekends around Ascension Day, Corpus Christi and German Unity Day also fill the terminals. Before booking, check whether your travel day coincides with the start of the holidays in a large neighbouring state.

Long-haul trips during the holidays

Many families use the long summer and Christmas holidays for long-haul trips from Frankfurt – to the USA, Asia or the Caribbean. Cars then stand with the provider for three, four or more weeks. Over such long periods the daily rate becomes the deciding factor, and comparing final prices is particularly worthwhile. Prepare the car for the long parking period: check the battery, remove valuables, take photos. Tips in the guide Preparing your car before your holiday. Also bear in mind that long-haul trips require entry documents for all family members – more in the guide Travelling with children at Frankfurt Airport.

Terminal 3 in its first holiday season

With the opening of Terminal 3 in April 2026, many holiday airlines changed their departure point. If you have always departed from Terminal 2 in previous years, you may now fly from Terminal 3 – with its own access road in the south of the site. Check the terminal before setting off and state it when booking parking. For rail travellers: the Sky Line goes to Terminal 3, and it was intermittently disrupted after opening. So allow an extra buffer. More in the guide Terminals at Frankfurt Airport.

If your holiday flight is cancelled

During the holidays especially, alternative flights are scarce. If your flight is cancelled shortly before departure, check the airline’s or tour operator’s offers immediately and cancel your parking free of charge in time if you cannot travel. In shorter-notice cases, contact us with your booking number. Your rights are explained in the guide Flight delayed or cancelled at Frankfurt Airport.

Holidays with a dog or cat

If you are going on holiday without your pet, organise care early – pet hotels are quickly booked up in high season. If your pet is travelling with you, entry rules and airline requirements apply, which you must clarify well before the flight. Of course, no animal may be left behind in the car at the parking provider.

Conclusion: plan early, travel relaxed

The holidays are the busiest travel period at Frankfurt Airport. If you book your parking early, know the right terminal and allow enough buffer on the day of travel, you start your holiday relaxed. All options are on the page Parking at Frankfurt Airport.
