Parking a large car, rental van or minibus at Berlin BER: what you need to know

Two white vans parked side by side – parking a large car or van at Berlin (BER) Airport

Berlin is different from the rest of Germany: lots of people don't own a car at all. When they travel, they often rent one just for the airport run – and if the whole family and their luggage are coming, a seven-seater or minibus makes sense. Others arrive in a company van, the sports club's bus or a big SUV from the suburbs. With large vehicles, and especially rented or borrowed ones, there are a few pitfalls when parking. This guide explains size classes, heights and contract questions, and covers motorhomes too.

Key facts at a glance

  • Size classes on Friend-Park: standard, large/SUV, van, transporter.
  • The provider decides which classes it accepts, the maximum dimensions and any surcharge.
  • With rental and borrowed vehicles, check whether third parties may drive – otherwise no valet.
  • Height is the key figure for multi-storey car parks at the terminals.
  • Motorhomes and trailers only with explicit agreement.

No car parks can be booked through Friend-Park at Berlin Airport yet.

As soon as a partner is activated, you will find their offers with real prices on the airport page.

Why size matters

A parking provider plans with bays roughly two and a half metres wide and five metres long. A small car leaves room to spare, a large SUV fills it, a long-wheelbase van doesn't fit. Then there's height: in multi-storeys and halls, the limit is often around two metres. High-roof vans and motorhomes stay outside. That's why providers use classes and often charge a surcharge for larger vehicles.

Classes at a glance

StandardSmall and compact cars, estates, small SUVsUsually none
Large/SUVLarge SUVs, 4x4s, luxury carsLength, width

When booking you see which classes a provider accepts and whether a surcharge applies. The class appears in your confirmation. General answers: can I park a large vehicle?.

The rental van: three questions before booking

May a third party drive it?

Many rental agreements only allow named drivers. A valet driver isn't one – which can mean trouble with the rental company if something happens. Read the agreement or ask. If third parties may not drive, choose shuttle parking, where you park the vehicle yourself.

May it stay at the airport for days?

With classic rentals that's usually fine as long as the rental period covers it. Car-sharing is different: many services don't allow cars to be left outside their area for days, or charge heavily for it. Check before booking parking.

Which plate do I enter?

The rental's plate. If you only collect the car the day before and don't know it when booking, add it later. Without the right plate, the barrier won't recognise your booking. See correcting wrong details.

The seven-seater

Seven-seaters are taller than normal cars, usually just under two metres. For the van class, height is what counts. That's generally fine for terminal multi-storeys, but not with a roof box or rack. Booking valet? Ask where the handover is. With shuttle parking on an open lot, height rarely matters.

The nine-seater

Ideal for groups: a school leavers' trip, a football team to a tournament, friends off on a stag or hen weekend. It usually belongs in the transporter class. On the shuttle, everyone must fit on the bus – enter them all and flag big bags in the comments. See passengers on the shuttle.

The company van

Technicians flying out of BER often arrive in a panel van. High-roof models are over 2.50 metres and fit no multi-storey, and many companies don't let third parties drive. Shuttle parking on an open lot in the transporter class is the usual route. Keep tools out of sight in the load area.

The big SUV from the suburbs

People from Brandenburg often drive larger cars than city residents. A big SUV usually belongs in large/SUV. Watch the width with mirrors – registration documents usually give it without. Add 20 to 30 centimetres.

The motorhome

Some travellers end a camping trip on the Baltic coast or in the Uckermark and then fly on from BER. Leaving a motorhome at the airport is only possible with providers that explicitly allow it. Motorhomes are often over three metres tall, seven metres long and heavier than 3.5 tonnes. Valet is out. Ask the provider directly and get the agreement in writing. Caravans and trailers are rarely accepted.

An example from Kreuzberg

A family with three children doesn't own a car. For two weeks in Portugal they rent a seven-seater, collect it the evening before and drive to BER in the morning. They booked the van class without knowing the plate, so they add it after collection. The rental agreement only allows named drivers, so they chose shuttle parking: they park on the open lot themselves, photograph car and bay, and ride the shuttle to the terminal with five people. On return they take the car straight back to the rental station, with photos from collection, airport drop-off and pick-up in hand. Everything is documented; nothing needs discussing.

School holidays and large vehicles

On the first day of the Berlin and Brandenburg school holidays, it's not just shuttles that are in demand but also spaces for large vehicles, as many families drive to BER in vans or rented minibuses. Book early and you have a choice; book late and you may find no suitable offer left in the transporter class. Compare final prices including size surcharges, as the order of the cheapest options can change.

Large electric cars

Electric SUVs are heavy and wide, but dimensions decide the class. If you want to charge, check whether the provider has chargers. A rental EV should usually be returned with enough charge – plan for that if you drive straight to the rental station after your trip.

Finding the dimensions

German registration documents give length, width and height in millimetres; for a rental, the document is usually in the glovebox or the rental company can tell you. If in doubt, measure, including roof equipment, and save the figures on your phone.

Booked the wrong class?

If you realise before the trip that the vehicle is bigger than booked – for example because the rental company gives you a different model – change the class straight away. On the day it may be too late: when the Berlin and Brandenburg holidays start, large spaces are scarce. See getting your booking details right.

On your return

Large vehicles are sometimes parked separately, so valet delivery may take a little longer. Call once you have your bags and say which terminal. Check the sides and roof edge before driving off – that's where manoeuvring scrapes appear on big vehicles. With rentals this is doubly important, because you must account for the condition when you return it. More in collecting your car at BER.

Checklist

  • Note dimensions, including mirrors and roof equipment.
  • Choose the right class and compare final prices including size surcharges.
  • Rental vehicles: check third-party driving and parking rules.
  • Valet: confirm the handover point and any height limit.
  • Shuttle: list every passenger and bulky luggage.
  • Motorhome only with written confirmation.

Conclusion

Whether it's your own SUV, a rented seven-seater or a company van, you can park large vehicles at BER without trouble when class, dimensions and rental terms fit. For tall and rented vehicles, shuttle parking is often the safest choice. Find suitable offers on parking at Berlin Airport.

Frequently asked questions

Only if the rental agreement allows third parties to drive and the provider accepts the size class. Otherwise shuttle parking is the safe option.

Usually van. What decides it are the provider's dimensions for the class – height above all.

Often, because it takes more space. You see any surcharge per size class when booking.

Only by providers that explicitly allow them. Ask before booking and get it confirmed in writing.
