Booking parking at Berlin BER: five common mistakes and how to get every detail right

Calendar app on a smartphone – entering your parking booking details correctly for Berlin (BER) Airport

In Berlin, people book airport parking on the go – on the U-Bahn, in a lunch break, late at night on the sofa. That works fine as long as the details are right. From customer enquiries, though, we know five mistakes that crop up again and again, and each one can cost time or trigger a surcharge on travel day. This guide goes through them one by one and then shows what a perfect booking looks like – with special attention to rental cars, which many Berliners use for the airport run.

Key facts at a glance

  • Arrival means the time you reach the provider, not your departure.
  • Give Terminal 1 or 2, even though the distances are short.
  • Add your return flight number – essential for late landings.
  • Enter passengers and plate precisely, including for rental or borrowed cars.
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the service starts.

Why the provider asks for so much

Every field has a job. The arrival time decides when a driver is sent or which bus takes you. The terminal decides where the driver waits. The return flight number lets the provider track delays without you having to call. The passenger number tells the shuttle how many seats to keep free. And the plate is how barriers and staff recognise your booking. On a holiday morning a provider at BER handles dozens of these at once, and every inaccurate detail disrupts the plan – which you feel first.

Mistake 1: departure time instead of arrival time

The classic. The form asks when you'll be with the provider; many people enter their take-off time. For the provider, that's completely different information.

Do it right: work backwards. Example: flight to Barcelona at 06:40 from Terminal 1. Airlines often recommend two hours for European flights, so 04:40 at check-in. With valet, enter about 04:25. With shuttle parking in Waßmannsdorf, add check-in and the transfer – 03:55 to 04:05 is realistic. More on timing in reserving and planning parking at BER.

Mistake 2: no terminal

Many assume the terminal doesn't matter at BER because everything is close together. For the valet meeting point, it does: Terminals 1 and 2 have separate forecourts and the driver waits at a specific spot. Shuttle buses don't stop everywhere either.

Do it right: take the terminal from your airline booking and enter it in the form or comments. Say it again when you call on the day.

Mistake 3: no return flight number

Without a flight number, the provider only knows the scheduled landing time. If your flight is two hours late, the driver waits in vain – or has gone by the time you appear. With late evening flights, which at BER are tightly scheduled around night-time restrictions, this matters even more.

Do it right: enter the scheduled landing time and flight number. Flying home via a connection – say from New York via London? Give the number of the final leg into Berlin. Delays: FAQ on delayed return flights.

Mistake 4: too few passengers

With shuttle parking, everyone rides the bus to the terminal. Book two and turn up with four and the provider has a planning problem – and you may face a surcharge. It often happens when visiting friends or family decide to join at the last minute.

Do it right: enter everyone, children included, and update the booking if the number changes. See passengers on the shuttle.

Mistake 5: wrong plate – especially with rentals

Many Berliners don't own a car and drive to BER in a rental, a parent's car from Brandenburg or a friend's car. The booking then often shows the wrong plate, or none at all. Barriers with plate recognition stay shut; staff can't find the booking.

Do it right: enter the plate of the car you'll actually arrive in. If you don't know it yet, add it as soon as you do. See correcting wrong details. Car-sharing vehicles are a special case: most car-sharing services don't allow you to leave cars at the airport for days. Check with your provider before booking parking.

Don't forget vehicle size

Many offers ask you to choose standard, large/SUV, van or transporter. The provider decides which it accepts, the maximum dimensions and any surcharge. If you rent a nine-seater for a group trip, choose the right class. More in parking a large car or van at BER.

The comments field

Use it for anything without its own field: a wheelchair or walker for the shuttle, a child seat for the bus, a pet in a carrier, a different person collecting the car, or your terminal if there's no field for it. Don't use it for changes to dates, times or passengers – they belong in the proper fields.

Special case: very early departures

The first flights leave BER early. For a 06:00 flight you'll be at the provider around 04:00, and the booking starts that morning. If you arrive the evening before and sleep at an airport hotel, it starts that evening. With such times, check the provider's regular operating hours; outside them, some take cars for a one-off surcharge. See early flights from BER.

Special case: guests using your car

If visitors drive your car to BER and leave it there, the booking must fit them: their name, their mobile number, the right plate. Forward the confirmation and explain when to call the provider. Guests who don't speak German will appreciate a note with the key phrases.

Special case: business trip with an open return

On business trips, the return is often not booked yet. Enter the expected return date and add the flight number and time once confirmed. If the trip is extended, change the booking in good time. More in business travel from BER.

School holidays in Berlin and Brandenburg

Berlin and Brandenburg often have school holidays at the same time, so the first day brings lots of families to BER at once. Add a generous buffer to your arrival time, book early and get the passenger number right, because shuttles are full on those days. If your children attend an international school with a different calendar, you may be able to avoid the peak entirely.

After booking: two minutes of checking

Read your confirmation immediately. Are date, times, terminal, plate and passengers correct? Is the provider's address or meeting point included? Fix errors straight away. You can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before the service starts; changes are explained in cancelling or changing parking at BER. No confirmation? See confirmation not received.

A week before: check your flight times

Airlines change schedules: 06:40 becomes 07:25, Terminal 1 becomes Terminal 2. A week before departure, compare your airline booking with your parking booking. Two minutes now saves explanations on the day.

Conclusion

Five mistakes cause most booking problems at BER: the wrong time, no terminal, no return flight number, too few passengers and the wrong plate. Know them, and you'll book correctly in minutes – and start your trip relaxed. All offers are on parking at Berlin Airport.
