Parking at Hamburg Airport: answers to the most frequently asked questions
Published on · updated on
No car parks can be booked through Friend-Park at Hamburg Airport yet.
As soon as a partner is activated, you will find their offers with real prices on the airport page.
Hamburg has an airport that is particularly close to the city – and precisely for that reason it raises its own questions about parking. Do I really have to set off so early when it is only a few kilometres? What does the Elbe Tunnel mean for my planning? And is a parking service worthwhile when the S-Bahn goes right to the terminal? Here are the answers, each with a link to the detailed guide.
Key facts at a glance
- Two terminals, central security check in the Airport Plaza.
- A short distance does not mean a short journey time – allow for Hamburg traffic.
- From south of the Elbe, factor in the Elbe crossing with a buffer.
- Free cancellation at Friend-Park up to 24 hours beforehand.
Questions about location and getting there
The airport is in the middle of the city – do I even need a buffer?
Yes. The distance is short, but it leads through a large city. In rush-hour traffic, a few kilometres can take a long time. Plan according to the traffic at your planned departure time, not the ideal time. Details: Driving to Hamburg Airport.
I live south of the Elbe. What do I need to watch out for?
The Elbe crossing. The Elbe Tunnel (A7) and the Elbe bridges (A1) are known congestion hotspots, and roadworks add to this. Check the traffic reports shortly before setting off. More for travellers from the surrounding region: Getting to Hamburg Airport from the region.
What do I enter in the satnav?
Not the airport address, but the address or meeting point from your car park booking.
Questions about the airport
Check-in at Terminal 1, friends at Terminal 2 – where do we meet?
At the Airport Plaza between the terminals; that is also where the central security check is. More: Terminals at Hamburg Airport.
How early do I have to be there in the morning?
Your airline will tell you. Because all passengers go through the same check, it can get busy early in the morning. Tips: Early flight from Hamburg.
Questions about parking
Is a parking service worthwhile when the S1 goes to the airport?
For city-centre residents with little luggage, the S1 is often the simplest solution. With family, heavy luggage, from the surrounding region or at off-peak times, a car park at the airport is often more practical. Overview: Parking options at Hamburg Airport.
Valet or shuttle – which pays off?
For a few days, valet's time advantage often outweighs the rest; for long trips, the shuttle's price advantage. More: Valet or shuttle at Hamburg Airport and Parking costs at Hamburg Airport.
My car is a van – is that possible?
That depends on the provider; multi-storey car parks often have height restrictions. See frequently asked questions about large vehicles.
Who has my key with valet?
The provider's driver who parks your car. How to document the handover: Vehicle handover at Hamburg Airport.
Questions about the return
I land at 23:00 – will I still get my car?
That depends on the provider's return times. Check them before booking. More: Late arrival at Hamburg Airport.
My return flight is delayed – do I have to let them know?
Yes, in the event of major delays. See frequently asked questions about a delayed return flight.
More questions from everyday life in Hamburg
Can I park in the residential streets around the airport?
This is strongly discouraged. The streets around Fuhlsbüttel and Langenhorn are residential areas where parking is scarce and restrictions often apply. If you park there for several days, you risk fines or having your car towed – and annoy residents. For trips, a fixed parking space at the airport or with a provider is the right solution.
Can I have my electric car charged during my trip?
Whether a provider offers charging is stated in its description; it is usually booked as an additional service. Photograph the battery level at handover and set off with enough range for the drive home.
What happens if I return earlier?
Contact the provider as soon as you know. Many can have the car ready earlier if they are informed in good time.
Can someone else collect my car?
Only by arrangement with the provider. Enter the name of the person collecting in the notes field and give them the booking number.
Do I have to wash the car beforehand?
No. But a clean car makes documentation easier, because scratches are easier to see – a real advantage in Hamburg's rainy weather.
What if I got my terminal wrong?
Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are connected via the Airport Plaza. Switching on foot is quick. With valet, ask the provider whether the meeting point can be adjusted.
Are there sample prices for Hamburg Airport?
No. Friend-Park only shows real prices from affiliated providers for your specific travel dates. As long as no provider is affiliated at Hamburg Airport, we deliberately do not state any prices or estimates.
What do I do in the event of damage?
Raise it immediately on site, photograph it and have it recorded in writing before you drive off. Then contact the provider in writing and, for bookings via Friend-Park, also our support via the contact form.
Can I transfer my booking to someone else?
At Friend-Park you can change the name, vehicle, number plate, flight details and notes yourself up to the handover. For a different period, cancel in good time and book again.
How early before the autumn holidays should I book?
As soon as your flight is confirmed. Hamburg traditionally has two weeks of autumn holidays, and on the first weekend popular offers are quickly taken. With free cancellation up to 24 hours before the service begins, you stay flexible.
What if my flight is cancelled because of a storm?
Then the normal cancellation rules apply to the car park. Cancel as early as possible – free of charge at Friend-Park up to 24 hours before the service begins. Claims relating to the flight cancellation are to be made against the airline.
Can I get something out of the car during my trip?
Most providers do not allow this, because the vehicles are parked on secured areas. Take everything you need for the trip with you.
How do I contact Friend-Park?
Via the contact form. For urgent questions on the day of travel, the parking provider is your first point of contact; its number is in the confirmation.
Can I park with a roof box or bike rack?
In principle yes, but multi-storey car parks usually have height restrictions, and private providers need to know whether your vehicle fits on their site. State the attachment when booking and, if in doubt, clarify in advance whether the provider accepts your vehicle.
What applies if my return flight is diverted?
Inform the provider of the new situation immediately. If you only arrive in Hamburg later or on another day, additional parking days may be incurred. The airline usually organises the onward journey.
Do I have to count children as passengers?
Yes, with shuttle parking you should state all fellow travellers, including children. The number of passengers determines the space in the shuttle and may affect the price with some providers.
How long is the cancellation link valid?
If, as a guest, you enter your email address and booking number via “Find booking”, you receive a secure link that is valid for 72 hours. You can cancel online up to 24 hours before the vehicle handover at the latest.
Where can I find more answers?
