Holiday tips for Stuttgart Airport: planning travel day with valet or shuttle parking
Published on
If you live in the Stuttgart area as an expat, you travel on two calendars. There are the German school holidays that shape your children's school year and fill the airport – two weeks at Whitsun, a late summer break, autumn and Christmas. And there are the dates that matter back home: Thanksgiving, Christmas with family in Texas or Ohio, a wedding in Manchester, Diwali in Pune. Both calendars lead through Stuttgart Airport. This guide gathers practical tips for travel day with valet or shuttle parking, from the weeks before your trip to the drive home.
Key facts at a glance
- Know the Baden-Württemberg holiday dates – the first day is the busiest.

Know the German holiday calendar
Baden-Württemberg has some of the latest summer holidays in Germany, typically starting at the end of July and lasting into September. Like Bavaria, it also has two weeks of Whitsun holidays in late May or June. Autumn holidays fall around the end of October and Christmas holidays run from just before Christmas to early January. On the first weekend of each, the airport, the A8 and the shuttle lots on the Filder plain are packed. If your children attend an international or DoDEA school, their calendar may differ – but you will still share the roads with everyone else.
Peak dates for the international community
Expats add their own peaks. The days before Thanksgiving see many American families leaving. The week before Christmas is busy for everyone. Summer moves (PCS season for military families) bring one-way trips with lots of luggage. Plan these dates as carefully as German school holidays.
Weeks before: booking and choosing
For peak dates, book parking several weeks in advance. Popular providers fill up. Thanks to free cancellation up to 24 hours before the service starts, booking early carries little risk. Use the time to decide between valet and shuttle:
- Valet is ideal with children, lots of luggage or tight timing – you hand over at the terminal.
- Shuttle often suits longer trips and travellers on a budget, as long as you allow time for the bus.

A week before: check the details
Compare flight times and terminal with your parking booking. Has the airline changed the schedule? Is the return flight number correct? Are all passengers listed? If anything has changed, update the booking now. More on the booking itself in getting your booking details right.
The evening before
- Read the confirmation and note the meeting point or lot address.
- Save the provider's phone number and write it on paper too.
- Check in online and save boarding passes offline.
- Pack the car, but leave valuables in your hand luggage.
- Check the route and traffic forecast.
Travel day: the drive
From Vaihingen and Möhringen the airport is close, but the A8 and local roads clog quickly. From Böblingen and Sindelfingen, the A81 and A8 are the main routes. From Ludwigsburg, Esslingen or Tübingen, allow more time. On the first day of the holidays, add 30 to 45 minutes. Call the provider 20 to 30 minutes before arrival with your booking number, licence plate and terminal. If you run into traffic, call immediately. See also running late on the way to the airport.
At handover
Photograph the car on all sides and the dashboard. Remove valuables, documents and garage or base access cards. Hand over only the car key. Details in safe parking and damage at Stuttgart.
Flying with children
With kids, valet saves you from loading everyone and everything onto a shuttle. If you use shuttle, list all children as passengers and ask about child seats. Bring snacks and something to do for the wait. More in the guide travelling with family and luggage from Stuttgart.
Long-haul trips home
A trip to the US or Asia often means two or three weeks away and a return after a long journey. Leave your car ready for that moment: a jacket appropriate to the season you return to, water, a charging cable and, in winter, an ice scraper. If you return in December from a warm destination, a coat in the car makes the walk to the vehicle much more pleasant. For long stays, read long-term parking at Stuttgart.
Early flights
Many holiday flights from Stuttgart leave before 7 a.m. Pack the evening before, put passports and keys in a fixed spot and set two alarms. If you live further out, consider a hotel near the airport. More in early flights from Stuttgart.
Choosing a fixed call point
The further you drive, the more useful it is to decide in advance where you will call the provider. That way nobody fumbles with the phone in traffic, and the driver or shuttle team gets a reliable lead time. Good call points lie about 20 to 30 minutes from the airport: the Stuttgart interchange from the north, the Wendlingen exit from the east, the Aich area on the B27 from Tübingen, or the Leonberg triangle from the west. If you have a passenger, let them make the call and keep the confirmation and boarding passes handy.
Pets, sports gear and special luggage
Holiday trips often involve more than suitcases. Skis and snowboards in winter, golf bags in spring, bikes in summer, a dog crate for the family pet staying with friends. For shuttle parking, mention every bulky item in the notes so the provider can plan space on the bus. For valet, make sure everything comes out of the car at the terminal – double-check the boot before you hand over the key. If you are dropping a pet at a boarding kennel on the way, add that stop to your timing.
A sample travel day
The Millers from Böblingen fly to Orlando via Frankfurt on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The first flight leaves Stuttgart at 9:30 from Terminal 3. They have booked valet.
| Time | Step |
|---|---|
| Evening before | Online check-in, luggage in the car, provider's number saved |
| 6:15 | Leave Böblingen via the A81 |
| 6:30 | Call the provider from the Stuttgart interchange |
| 6:55 | Handover at the meeting point, photos of the car |
| 7:10 | Bag drop |
| 7:50 | Through security |
The return
After landing, collect your luggage first, then call the provider and mention your terminal. For valet the car is brought to the meeting point; for shuttle you go to the agreed stop. Walk around the car before driving off. If you are jet-lagged, have a coffee before the drive home. More in picking up your car after your trip.
When plans change
Illness, a cancelled flight or a strike: inform the provider immediately. On Friend-Park you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before the service starts. See flight cancelled and changing a booking.
Conclusion
Travelling on two calendars means more peak dates – and more reason to plan. Book early, keep your booking accurate, call ahead, photograph the car and leave something warm in it for your return. Then the start and end of your holiday are as relaxed as the middle. All offers are on the page parking at Stuttgart Airport.
